MG TD TF 1500 - One step further in the Restoration

I finished the cut and buff on the tub. We used Acrylic Urethane paint in Woodland Green that was mixed from a 1950's British color chip.

We went with single-stage paint to be closer to the original.

I used the 3M Trizact sanding system. This uses a 6 inch 1500 and 3000 sanding disk on a DA sander. The paint is then finished with 3M rubbing compound on a buffer and then finished with 3M finish polishing compound.

I have a few parts I need to respray due to problems we had with the first pot of paint.

Hopefully, I will have the tub on next week.

Bruce,

V nice paint/panel work on your TD. I like the Woodland Green.

T types tubs re not easy to get right in all aspects.
Congratulations.

Bruce: Did you ever paint in acrylic or nitrocellulose lacquers? I am wondering how your paint compares in both process (time/effort) as well as end results (smoothness, swirl marks, shine).
Christopher Couper

Chris. Never did Nitrocellulose. I wish we could use it here in California. I have read you can buy it from the UK.

I have used Acrylic Enamel on other cars. My B was painted 15in it.

I find the Acrylic Urethane is nice to work with. I had problems with the first pieces in that we could not get the scratches out of the paint. We figured we either mixed the first pot incorrectly or the temperature was an issue. The paint never really cured.

All the other pieces are fine. I used 1500 sandpaper to get the finish smooth, then 3000, and then the wool buffing pad with the cutting compound. It buffed out to a very good deep shine.

Looks fantastic! Congrats to reaching the top of the mountain. After the paint stage it's all downhill getting closer to the end result.

What color interior is being installed? I am unsure of the exterior/interior combinations available for Woodland green on the TD.

Frank.

The color of this car has been an interesting journey. When I got it in 1973 it had primer all over it. I remember it as mostly primer with dark green areas. We dipped all the parts in a chemical stripping tank and used paint stripper on the tub when we first restored it, so we did not have a good idea of the original color.

The interior was sprayed in silver paint, but when I took off the firewall and used thinner on the silver, we found this green paint underneath. We also found a similar green under the cowl when we removed the inner dash. Woodland is what matches it even though all the books say woodland was not available for the 50 TD.

What I have learned is that it appears it was possible to order a TD from the factory in different colors than in the brochure. Bill Chasser has his father's TD/C that also is painted in Silverstreak gray, a color that was not supposed to be available for the year.

In researching the paint color, I even talked to Anders Clausager. He feels that it was possible to get other colors from the factory. I am assuming you probably could order any color in the Neufield color book.

This car had a black interior when I got it, so I was not sure of the original interior. But during this restoration, I found two tiny scraps of material that were covered in silver paint (don't you just love PO's).

When I wiped the material with thinner, it turns out the interior was green.

So it will be returning to green/green.
