MG TD TF 1500 - Oneonta G.O.F.

Hope to see some of you at the Oneonta G.O.F.

I'll be there Tuesday or Wednesday with one, or two, or even three TFs.
David.
D. Sander

We won't be there... Leslie is travelling for work. We will be there for GOF 95 in VT.
Blair Weiss

Blair,
You and Leslie will be missed! Does this mean i have a chance at the Funkanna :-). See you in Middlebury in June.

I arrived at the GOF safely, I was enthusiastically greeted at the front door by our own Steve W., and I saw Morts green TD in the parking lot.
I know there are at least two TFs here, and one survivor.

D. Sander

I went to the GOF in NY this past weekend to check out the TF Survivor Challenge. Got a chance to meet Gordon and check out his original TF with five engine rebuilds with a 1/2 million total miles. Incredible... I also glad I met Dave Sander and check out his restored black TF. He did an impeccable job!

I came equipped with my camera to check out the Survior TF's. Since I wasn't registered for the GOF, I couldn't vote... but I bet it was close. I left before they announced a winner. I'm sure Dave will chime in with the news.

I'm glad I went and it was a great learning experience. I hope to come to a future GOF with mine someday.

Below is a picture of Gordon telling his story how he acquired his TF and all the many miles traveled.

The rear splash with the spot welds. Difficult to take a picture but you can feel the spot welds with your finger. Definitely there.

I showed up just before this kicked off so I didn't get the names of the other two people with their TF's. This was a very nice example.

This is an early car. Picture of the VIN plate and some surviving nickle on the Patent plate.

Also notice the nut and washerthat attaches the side bonnet and the bolt to the flasher is painted body color.

The protective plastic covering for the tach and wiring loom. Also a nice picture of the bracket that holds the brass coupling for the flexible oil line from the lower banjo to the copper oil line, and the the cad plated p-clip for attaching wiring to the hood side panel.

I had to take a picture of the nice space and fit between the rear wing, rear splash, and rear bumper.

Driver seat with some patina but notice the original bright red leather underneath where it was un-stitched.

This was a really cool car. Again, I didn't get the person's name but I have read his story on Hemming's how he acquired the car.

I finally can see in person the color of the top bow. It definitely is a beige/pink probably to match close to the color of the canvas top from the factory.

Another picture where the paint was in better condition.

In another thread, someone pointed out the bolts for the tank straps were Phillips head. Not so!!

These bolts on mine (car#1414) are hex head just like on this car #2217. Dave and Gordon's TF had phillips head.

I also checked out the overflow pipes. All three went over the plate and not thru the hole.

I would have taken pictures of the rugs but it looked all were replaced in it's lifetime.

Enjoy

Frank

Frank,
I was good to meet you. You certainly understand what the challenge is all about. Thanks for taking the pictures and posting them. You will also notice the under side of the tool box lid is black on all three cars. This too is correct. On some cars you can actually see the overspray from the tool box lid, it was laid up side down on the side curtain compartment floor for painting.
I just got home after unloading the two TFs and unpacking the truck.
The cream colored car won the challenge, with Jean's beautiful red TF comming in second, but the vote counts were close for all three. They were all very nice cars.
I am so glad these three cars were able to come to the challenge to be appciated, noticed and documented. You just can't restore original. B.T.W the tempature was 96 degrees and very humid when I got there on Wednesday. We had rain, wind and cold. It was 38 degrees this morning when I got up.
It was a good GOF, and a good time to meet face to face with many of our frequent bbs posters. Perhaps at the Middlebury GOF next June we can have a forum get together.

The Safety Fast inspection. Mort scored a perfect score with 0 points deducted.

Heading home. Two TFs, the Regist's new valve cover racing track and boxes, boxes and boxes to unload from the truck.

My mileage on the return trip. Arg! It is sideways again. It was 11.6 mpg.

I browsed around online to check out paint chips just to see if there is a color that is a close match. The picture was taken with filtered sun (overcast) with no flash.

These are colors for interior and not for applying to metal but it is a decent guide to this elusive color for those who haven't seen an original top bow in person.

I'm sure someone could get creative to make this work for painting metal. Each of these are in the red color family.

Just wanted to congratulate Dave Sander and all the others who worked on organizing this GoF. I'm sure it was a lot of work and time. A good time was had by all.

An additional note. I think the concept of a safety inspection is a GREAT idea. I watched Dave Sander and Rick Smith carefully go over many vehicles and used there precious experience to point out many safety defects on cars. These were items that the owners were unaware of and could be potential problems. I know I speak for all the owners that were there in thanking you both for your time and expertise.

relative to the top bow color- IMHO I don't think you can put much faith in on-line color chips and photos of the original bows are so dependent on lighting conditions -it does have a pinkish cast, but I don't think it would be a close match in real life if it is in the red color family. I think the key word to look for is"taupe" when looking for a close color. I have seen a couple of close colors both with the word "taupe" in them- it is usually a tannish-grayish-pinkish color.

Even the two images above look completely different.

This formula was tested against an actual TD frame and its pretty close and its an automotive paint.

Chris,
Am I wrong in thinking that the TD and the TF top bows are compeletely different colors?

Frank,
Thanks for taking all of those great images! They will be very helpful as I re-assemble the TF that I took apart rather carelessly in my youth, taking no photos, knowing that I would have no trouble remembering where everything goes!

Best,

We have listed different colors for the top bows for the TD and TF. The TF color being a bit darker.

But there seems to be a lot of variability in the colors. I see top bows like this set which look more like the TD color and others like Matthews and Colins which are darker.

We still need someone from the dark TF camp to take a side curtain to the Dupont automotive paint store and see if they can come up with a Spectramaster color code. I would start with the YS237 and see if they can find one better.
Chris Couper

here is a nice shot of the color found on the internet, but it does look different under different lighting conditions.

Yup! A good week-end at GOF 94, despite some marginal weather.

The three TF Survivors were all pretty gruffy; mine was probably the roughest, but WTH, I drove my there and back. The others came on a trailer.

But as usual, my TF ran like a train, even through a sustained downpour near Albany. I kept warm and dry even at 60 mph in the rain.

The guy who won with the cream TF was very deserving. The story of how he acquired the car was exceptional.

For those of you planning to go to GOF 95 in Middlebury, make your hotel reservations NOW. I made mine in July, and I now understand the Middlebury Inn is filling quickly. Its a gorgeous place. Like going back 175 years - classic New England heritage.

I have blocked 10 rooms for Wednesday night, 20 for Thursday night and 60 for Friday and Saturday night at the Middlebury Inn. These rooms DO NOT show up when reserving on line. The "other" rooms are selling out fast. When you reserve your rooms, call the hotel directly and say you are with The New England MGT Register, and you want one of the rooms reserved by David Sander.
I will have more details on the Middlebury GOF shortly.
Thanks,
David
