MG TD TF 1500 - Opinions Wanted on 1500 Series

When a car came from the factory as a 1500 series and wearing the 1500 medallion on the side panel, does anyone have a comment on someone taking a 1250 TF and making a 1500 out of it? We seem to be seeing this more and more with people adding the 1500 badge to the car and selling it as a 1500. Even if they change the engine to an XPEG, which is not always the case and knowing it didn't come from the factory that way, how would you approach this situation? Don't mean to start a conflict, just curious on everyone's opinion. PJ

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig, and should be priced that way.

It is easy enough to tell a "real" 1500 car based on the chassis number on the front frame extension and Barrie Jones' records of all the factory 1500 chassis. The bigger issue may be a legitimate 1500 car that is actually equipped with a replacement 1250 XPAG engine since 1500 engines are really scarce. A recent thread here showed good details of how to identify a true 1500 block and head.

The problem is representing and selling it as a true 1500. I think significant difference in value between altered and the real thing. A friend has a beautiful Chevelle "427 SS" - that was originally a 390, he tells everyone that and left the VIN tag that codes for the 390 as well. Looks great, but worth a lot less. George

I'd have thought it would be quite difficult to misrepresent a 1250 as a 1500 unless the buyer was very casual about the car's identity. There is a lot of info on the internet as well as in this and other forums to enable a clear identification.

I know of a car, the guy doesn't advertise the chassis number. Gets testy when asked. I made a couple of constructive comments and he got really PO! Best let a dead horse lie. But the word is out to use caution. PJ

I know I can be a PITA at times, someone close to me has mentioned it a few times,Grin. So I asked again for the chassis number! We'll see what happens. PJ

Paul, the chassis number should be stamped into the left front frame extension. Of couse, that can be altered as well, just not as easily as a new scuttle plate.
