MG TD TF 1500 - Original colour

Would someone be able to advise me as to where I can obtain the original colour of my TD1523 built 3 May 1950. I restored the car four years ago however there was no indication of the original colour.

Well that record says it was updated in 2017 which is within J Walton's restoration period so I wonder if we have some circular logic going on here? :-)

j Walton: When you restored your car did you completely strip all the paint off? Sometimes you can see evidence of the original color under the lip of the dash beading and of course where the fenders bolt up to the body, especially the rear fenders.

Unfortunately there were no in tact records from the factory nor a code like the TFs have for the original colors.

Thanks William, OEW (Old English White ) is what I painted it. There was no indication of any colour on any part when I restored it. I think I will have to live with the unknown.
Many thanks ...John

John - original color is usually only guessed-at with early owner-supplied information from the MG clubs. As far as I know, there is no factory archive with original color information for the TD.

As suggested above, under-layers of paint can sometimes be helpful, but if the original paint was ever stripped off in earlier times, there may be no remaining evidence.

I found original color on the underside of the scuttle under the inner dash, and in the wood between the firewall and the tub. The underside of the firewall was painted body color, so the wood got some of that paint.

Thank you all for your comments.

There was no old timber in what I received for all of the panels had been stripped and undercoated in primer albeit some surface rust all round . This included the the tub on all sides as well as the tool box lid, guards etc. I installed new timber except from some in the doors.

It is sad to think that there are no records to find out as to what the original colour was or as to where it was shipped to in the States.

Butonce again thank you all for carrying out your detective activities for me.

I have been told (anecdotally?) that when MGB production was expanded in the 1970's due to high demand, the assembly line was extended straight through the company archives. So the majority of company papers were then thrown away, including - presumably - the records of individual cars, their details and shipping information.
