MG TD TF 1500 - 'Original' Heater

I have not seen the heater that came with our car (purchased in 1967)duplicated in the archives. We are in the process of refurbishing, and I don't know how well it works but it seems elegantly simple with minimal space requirements. It bolts right up to the underside of the battery box in the interior. The fan motor hangs over the transmission tunnel, and the fan sucks from the top of the unit and blows through the heat exchanger. First photo shows the heat exchanger inside the unit with one half of the housing removed

Second photo shows the intake side, to be offset a half inch or so from the bottom of the battery box. The 5/8" hose connectors push through the firewall forward of the battery.

Last photo shows the fan motor and the output vent through the heat exchanger fins. The motor hangs down into the interior, but is pretty much out of the way. We thought about getting a new fan and motor, but this seems to work just fine - it hardly needed cleaning.

If I were to optimize a heater for this car, I think this is close to what I would end up with.

My TF has a very similar heater. It is a GM unit, in the car for years. I was told it was a GM underseat heater.
It works well, and in the TF, fits nicely. I can still have access to the tranny dipstick. The dash undercover was nicely modified to accommodate the heater.

I agree, looks like a good design for our cars and their limited space...

Tom,

That is a very similar design. It looks like the fan has a pancake motor. That would be a design improvement.

My car has a fan switch with 3 speeds mounted on the dash where the MG badge was placed, to the right of the glove box. Badge re positioned to upper right of glove box.
Works well.
