MG TD TF 1500 - Original Oil Cap Wanted

Anyone in Oz have an original oil filler cap in great condition that they want to part with? Willing to swap or buy. Have plenty of restored goodies to choose from including 24433 water pumps with stainless steel spindles, MRN and FA ignition switches with NOS WBU keys, TD/TF hessian tool rolls made to original specs, acetyl handbrake bushes, 35 and 50 amp LUCAS fuses, rear side curtain rivet kits and late 40's circular LUCAS battery decals, to name just a few. I can also use an original TD thermostat housing (non - working is fine) and a water outlet in any condition, as well as a crankshaft pulley. Cheers

Not in Oz, but Abingdon Spares often has good used original parts. Worth a try.

Peter, I have an original cap which has the names of the various oil companies marked on it. Yours should you wish.
Regards,
John.... I can take it to Peters place for you to pick up if you would like.
J Walton

Thanks John. I'll give it a good home! I'll call you to arrange a meet at Peter's. Thanks Lew, but the shipping and the exchange rate is the killer for us on the other side of the world. I'm hoping that we can establish a network so that TTORC members can help each other with purchases and so avoid extortionate shipping and import charges at both ends. Cheers

Oil filler cap and thermostat housing now sorted. Just require a water outlet (elbow) now and a usable crankshaft pulley. Cheers

Is this an original TD thermostat and elbow? Can anyone confirm? Something seems odd about it. Cheers

P Hehir

Sure looks like my TD one. What do you think is odd?
Lew Palmer

The elbow doesn't appear to be correct though it's hard to tell from the pic. I'll check out Chris's gallery. Thanks Lew. Cheers

If I blow up the pic it looks standard to me.

The bypass pipe should be bolted onto the thermostat housing and bend down all with the same diameter. The one you show is part of the thermostat casting, not seperate. See Image 48 of TD 29539 on Chris' Original MGTD website. This is a late model MG, so early models may be different.

Jim
Does your bypass pipe bend down? It looks straight, but that wouldn't allow the rubber hose to connect to the lower radiator connection pipe T piece.

cheers Stuart

It looks quite straight to me.

Something is odd with the thermostat small elbow to the radiator bypass? Cheers

Peter it appears to me that the bypass elbow is not an elbow it looks as though it is straight.

John the small bypass fitting should come straight out of the thermostat housing as shown in Jim's pic. There appears to be some sort of pipe braised/welded onto that fitting. This is what I'm querying. It sure looks weird to me. It may just be that it needs to be cut off to make it original. The rest of it looks like Jim's pic. Do you have one in your collection John that looks just like Jim's'? Cheers

Peter,
Here's a photo of my bypass connection during my heater installation.

The other difference is that there is no bypass fitting as shown in Jim's pic. On the one I posted the bypass is cast as part of the thermostat housing. Jim's elbow and thermostat is spot on and this is what I seeking. Hopefully John has one of the correct thermostat bodies. These are easily modified to accept a Waxstat thermostat from a Holden Commodore. The large head elbow I can get from QLD. Cheers

Wow... So Declan and Jim's appear to be different? Which is correct? Cheers

Peter,
If you look at page D4 of the workshop manual you will see that mine is correct.

Just re-read your post Stuart. Good questions. I had a look in my archive hoping I might have a pic of this area on my car and here it is. The small branch elbow on the thermostat definitely bends down. Cheers

That thermostat elbow is a very expensive part for what it is!

Thanks Declan. That is really expensive! I feel a bit happier about swapping one of my rebuilt original ignition switches for the thermostat housing and the hard to find oil filler cap, with a local here. I think we both win. Cheers

Peter,
I have both the thermostat housing and the inlet elbow here but I have no way of getting anything in the post due to the Covid parcel post restrictions.

Thanks Declan for the offer but shipping even without Covid is really problematic. I'm happy to part with one of my ignition switches as it's going to someone who has helped me in the past and who will really appreciate it. He bought a Moss unit that was defective. It didn't burn up his wiring or set fire to his car as some switches did; it just didn't work. When he got around to installing it, the warranty had expired and Moss didn't want to know. Same thing happened to me with the side curtains... Caveat emptor.
