MG TD TF 1500 - Original primer?

Did Abingdon use Black primer predominantly on their panels? Seems like everything I strip there's a layer of Black over the bare metal, then there seems to be a layer of a Cream primer over it. Any input on this? Back in 2005, I bought a couple panels from Moss for the 72 and they came out of the box painted Black, so is this what Abingdon used? Not critical, just curious. Incidentally, the rear fender I just got from Hugh had a very pretty light Blue on it under the Red, was this a TF color? Another curiosity. PJ

My car had a first coat of black too. I can't remember if there was a red primer after as my car had been painted so many times I sort of got lost in the layers.

They were all red and the factory paint faded within a few years in the So Cal sun according to my father so it would have looked like primer :-)

they certainly used black primer on the early TF. Here is a genuine survivor, early TF with the black primer under the paint that has worn off.

This the rear of the dash of TF1414. Black primer was uses here.

When they painted the front they used a white primer to make the red dash paint more vivid and bright.

When I got Lazarus (1988) and began taking him back to his original Autumn Red color I noted that every unfinished piece of sheetmetal was painted with a black primer. It was not a matte finish primer as we are used to seeing today, it had a smooth finish to it. Bud

Black on my late TF too. I conclude that black was standard throughout.

Blue was not a TF colour.

When I dipped my Early TD parts I also noted that there was a regular primer and then a black coating.

Thanks for the input fellas. Like Bud said, the black primer was very smooth on the new B parts as well. Funny though, the new side panels for the TF were not coated with anything! Go figure. PJ
