MG TD TF 1500 - OT - MGB

Well, I’ve probably messed up big time. Jack Donegan, a stalwart member of our Foothills British Car Club, the owner of an exquisitely well restored ’72 MGB and a friend passed away last month. Two weeks after his death the Club presented his MGB at the Gallabrae “Great Scot!” British car show at Furman University where it took first in its class. The Club announced at the show that the car was for sale by Jack’s widow and, I guess, that’s when the seed was planted although I didn’t realize it until two weeks later. Anyway, last Thursday I bought it and I’ve been having a ball with it. Jud

I still have the ’53 TD (25009) and plan on keeping it as my primary “drive for fun” car but, I’ll tell you, transitioning from the TD to the MGB is like transitioning from a Curtis Jenny to an F-15. In addition to almost 50% more cc’s and (at least it looks to me like) dual header pipes, the MGB has a fantastic electric overdrive the makes for functionally a 6-speed transmission. I’ll scan and post Jack’s picture of the exhaust headers as soon as I can. Boy! It sure seems to me that the electric overdrive on a TD would be better than even a 5-speed box. Jud

Good luck with the car Jud, it sure looks like a beauty! We tentatively just sold our 72 to a fellow in Texas. PJ

Very nice Jud..sad circumstance for the purchase..stock exhaust looks like the one on the top.

Good, practical cars. My daily driver is a '67 BGT. You're right, it's completely modern by comparison. But that's why I like my T car better. I don't drive it for its modern creature comforts. I own seven classic cars, but if I could keep only one older car it would be my TC.

Steve, I completely agree but if I start something semi-major (send off the shocks and or instruments to be refurbed, redo the dash to go back to Rexine (actually vinyl but whatever) or, God forbid, something requiring the engine to be pulled like sucking in an air cleaner stud) I want something enjoyable to drive.

LaVerne, thinks for the photo. Looks like mine is the stock exhaust. Sure looks more “flow-y” than the TD or even my long departed TR-4A.

The early MGB exhaust manifold is actually a very good design. No need to change it unless you significantly increase the engine's ability to breath.

I've seen MGB overdrives (complete gearbox) installed in TDs. It actually fits pretty well. If there was a way to attach an overdrive module to a TC gearbox, I would have done so by now.

Jud, nice catch.

I loved my '64 MGB when it was only 9 years old, I was in HS.

I'll never own another, I need to be able to reach over the door and touch the pavement.

Back in 06, I was looking for a B, but found a 91 Vette Convertible instead. Love the Vette and my TD. why own only one. A lot of guys in our club and girls own more than one.

I just remembered something. The "Y" in the exhaust pipe rotted on my B. I was a poor HS kid and couldn't afford a new pipe that cost half what I'd paid for the car...

So I went to the local pharmacy and fixed it with plaster cast wrap. It held for a few months.

Congratulations. I tell people that after a long drive in the TF, my MGB feels like a Lexus. Enjoy it.

I tell people it's like driving a Caddillac in comparison to the TF
