MG TD TF 1500 - Paint detailing

I have been agonizing over some minor scratches on my bonnet for some time. Something must of got on my towel during a wipe down. Modern day paint two stage clear coat. What are you guys using? I have nice paint so experimenting isn't really what I am looking for. Any thoughts you have are welcome.

Thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich,

It all depends on what you define as "minor" scratches. If they are deep enough to catch on your finger nail they could be more difficult to remove or minimize without causing additional damage. You need a power buffer for this.

If your finger nail doesn't catch on the scratches, they are easily removed by hand with a little diligence. The first thing I would do is invest in some quality micro fiber towels so you're not scratching your clear coat during wipe down. What products to use can differ depending on single stage vs the two stage paints and color. For example, I'll use something different for a single stage black vs two stage black.

If you are close to Tigard, OR send me an email and maybe on a non rainy day we could meet up and I could fix your problem. Do it all the time for the neighbors who get paint transfer door dings.

I fix surface scratches, non fingernail grabbing, with 3000 grit then 5000 grit sand paper (very carefully). Then buff out with compound (3 levels coarse, mild, fine) with an orbital buffer.

In that location anything you do will be highly visible if you muck it up. I suggest you bring it by a local paint shop and discuss it. They likely can buff and blend it just fine especially if base/clear.

If it deep - but is just the clear coat you could try using an aerosol of blending solution. Melts the clear coat. Designed to blend in old and new clear coat for repairs

Pro XL Blend is the brand I use.

Cheers.
Dave.

The scratches are minor, in fact I am being very picky. There is definitely no need for sanding or new paint. I do use micro fiber cloths but even with those if you get something foreign on them you will potentially scratch your paint. Good suggestions so far thanks.

How can you bear to drive it...what with the enviable stone chips, etc? Everyone wants to keep them as nice as they can...and so do I, but if you use and drive it, it's going to get some wear. Sounds like you need a small amount of fine polishing compound/scratch remover.

Brian, i do drive it. Lucky enough to say no rock chips yet. I drive under the best conditions possible, when possible.

Check with your paint supplier or detailer shop for anti swirl polishes. Also some of the show type of pump spray bottles pretty much hide this type of stuff for at least a day :-)

And keep it out of fluorescent lighting. That stuff shows everything. Take it outside and most of this will disappear.
