MG TD TF 1500 - Paint prep woes (Louvers)

Does anyone have a trick in how to sand bonnet louvers and near other folded edges without slicing their finger tips to shreds? Gloves don’t work as I can’t get the pressure needed to get the inside edges.

May I suggest;

There are these rubber things, I believe they are called "pollywogs".
They come in both concave and convex.
You wrap sandpaper around EITHER end.
(The pointy end is very for getting into corners.

This should allow you to get into the louvers with minimal damage.

Look for them at wood working shops.

Scoth-Brite (folded a few times) or sanding sponges do a pretty good job. Coupled with a pair of heavy leather gloves.

A lot of of patience helps.

Jim thanks for the suggestion. I’ve never seen these before. I will see if I can find a store that carries them

Dan I’ve had lots of patience. I’ve spent the better part of 15 hours trying to do the louvers on one side panel. As I mentioned in the OP gloves are useless and I can’t get my fingers far enough into the louvers to apply pressure to the paper in order to get the inside edges. My fingers are simply too big LOL

I think the sponges would help out a lot.

But based on your experience so far I think I'd send the bonnet out to the blasters (glass or walnut). I do this whenever possible. Simply because I've little patience myself. Not to mention I also have the fat-finger problem.

Good luck sir

If your painting in lacquer, just wait until you have to color sand and then polish them. :-(

I was looking for a source for Jim’s “pollywogs” (aka Rockler contour sanding grips) and came across the link for making a sanding pad that matches the contour to be sanded using body filler. I think if (when) I need to do something similar I will try using some vinamold to make a more flexible version.
Seems like a potentially useful technique, hope it helps,
