MG TD TF 1500 - painting hinges
Hello I am coming to the end of nearly one year of body work/paint on the TF. My question has to do with how best to paint the door hinges. They are off the car. My painter is rightfully concerned that the paint will crack when the hinge is first opened. Is it best to remove the pin and paint the two hinge halves seperately? What have others done? Tom -- I painted mine with the same primer and paint that was used on the body parts and have not experienced any cracking. John |

The only issue I ever have is the paint of the top of the pin sometimes separates and you have to touch that up. But the hinges are fine. Give them some light oil and let it sit for a day or so before you try to open them. |

I am just planning to prime the hinges as they sit on the assembled car, then mix some of the body paint and paint them with a brush, and allowing the paint to flow out naturally. If all else fails I would have to re-do them. |

We paint all hinges separate from the pin. After fitting to the body tub and the body tub is bolted down to the chassis, and the door is hung, brush paint the primed pin top. We make new Stainless Steel pins to suit. The brass hinge sections must be etch primed over a blasted surface, we use Garnet, glass would be better than sandpaper. Wash away any media residue with a good metal cleaner. Primer and top coat must be as thin as possible only sufficient to get a coverage. The sharp edges on new replacement hinges must be taken off with a very fine file to just take away the knife edge, the paint will flow and bond better over a very very small radius, it will still look OK as this small radius will not be noticed. We use a two pack Polyurethane Acrylic paint that has a degree of flexibility. We have not experienced any paint issues since we commenced the above method. |

Tom - If you are going to paint your car black, have the hinges plated with black nickle plating. I did that nearly 30 years ago and the still look great. Cheers - Dave |
