MG TD TF 1500 - Patent Plate and Carb Dampeners

Two questions:

1) How is the patent plate on the side curtain frame orientated?
Is it on the inside, is it up pr down?

2) My engine # is;
XPAG TD2 16052
I have two different carb dampeners. One is hex one is knurled round.
Which is the correct one?

Thanks

Jim B.

I believe your dampers should be hexagon shape.
On your type of piston chamber the cap should have a small hole to allow the damper to vent, I can't see this in your photo
On later carbs (called "dust free") this vent is internal from the damper chamber to the piston chamber via a drillway.

I think hex caps started on the TF. That is what From The Frame Up shows as well. Ray correct that they have to have the vent hole. George

The knurled caps are associated with H4 carbs. My MKIIs all have them. The five sets of H2 carbs I have all use the hex heads

G'day Jim. The attached pic is of an original albeit badly rusted RHD TD frame, showing the location of the patent plate. I can provide exact measurements if required. The jig was used to make three pairs of front frames. Patent plates can be had from FTFU along with the correct pair of rivets/pins to attach them. Cheers

The notations F and T in the first pic refer to the position of the 'Full' angle and where it starts to taper. Cheers

Pic 3. This is an original TF frame under an original TD. Note that the location of the plate differs. Cheers

Bill, That may be what is on your carbs, but not how they left the factory. 100% positive H2s had knurled nuts on all TC's and TDs. Moss lists same- hex only on TFs with H4s. Not sure about MkIIs. Find the article in TSO Feb. 2008 by Doug Pelton. George

Interesting. Never noticed this pattern. Of course my car is wrong as I have hex ones and not only that, they somehow have been planed down on an angle. I never figured that out before either. :-(

Chris, since your car is really original (of course), maybe both were used? If anyone can find Doug's article that would be great. My magazines are buried deeply in a closet... George

As an aside to the vent hole in the cap.
Moss Europe sell new dampers with a cast bronze MG motif. They all have a hole so are Ok for early carb. If fitted to "dustfree" carbs they must be blocked. If not you have a continuous air bleed to the piston chamber bringing in all sorts of crud.

" The cap went from round to hex with the TF so it would be inappropriate
for a TC . The hex cap also has a longer shaft...I would welcome any comments and corrections to the above. My data is
very sparse so again I caution anyone drawing
any absolutes from the above. "
Above from Doug's article in TSO. George

George, you are correct. the Workshop Manual for the TD shows round nuts for the dampers.

Thank you Peter;
My side curtain frames had a plate on them, when I got them but I took it off to paint and did not record where it was.

I went to FTFU, since Doug's name was mentioned.
He shows the round ones as being correct for the TC and TD.
Hex ones for the TF.
I ordered a set from there, so I can have a matching set.

I had looked at the covers wit the MG engraving, but to use them one must remove the old dampeners and press them into the new covers.

I envisioned, myself, bending the hell out of the old ones.

Thanks to all.
