MG TD TF 1500 - Peable Beach TD.

Almost looks like a model car.

Nice, but a whole lot of things wrong: chrome tank ends, cheesy air cleaners, shiny washers and wrong screws under the fenders, the " Auster" plate outside the windscreen, no cover band on the generator, etc., etc. Really nice bodywork, but a lot wrong for a $38K car. George

There are two more correct TD's locally in as good of a condition that have failed to take 1st place at local All British Car Days and MG GoF's.
Nice car, but $38,000 and Pebble Beach? Have a tough time with that.

Pushed into place for photos...no oil drips on display.

Nice looking car though.

Aren't the wind wings on upside down? Mine have the adjustor know facing up, not down.

I thought they used an odd assortment of bolts and maybe screws as well. I used original style in stainless and buffed the bolts and fender washers to a chrome shine. A waste of time I know but I like the look.

Bet is was restored by someone who is not really familiar with the car. Although I have a wooden dash, wire wheels and other stuff, I know it is not original. the dash, chrome sides on the gas tank to me are signs that someone restored it to what he liked, not to concours specifications. Nice car but 38 grand, come on now......by the way Bruce, I love the spelling of Pebble Beach on the title...
Tom Maine

I thought chrome end caps on the fuel tank were original on the TD. Am I mistaken?

Thanks.

You are, Jud. The chrome is only on the outer edge bead. The flat, center surface is the tub color. Bud

Egads! I hate clear coated paint like this. And those fasteners. Oh the humanity.

The car is also not consistent or correct in its finishes either as some have pointed out the obvious flaws. Flat paint in some places, gloss in others, no finish where there should be and sometimes chrome...

Lots of incorrect parts and I have not figured out whats wrong with the bonnet handles. Maybe just not fully latched. And whats up with that battery bar?

Just goes to show that even Pebble Beach has warts.
Chris Couper

Jud - the entire end caps of the gas tank are chrome, but the inner portion is painted body color leaving only the raised edge in chrome as an accent.

Leaving them all chrome isn't original, although some owners leave them that way. Not wanting to sound like a nose-up snob, I still can't imagine a car with them in all chrome being allowed past the visitor parking at Pebble Beach. It's too far off the mark.

Before becoming familiar with these cars I had thought that the chrome was simply strips that were clipped around the perimeter of the ends of the fuel tank.

So if I understand if and from looking at Dave Braun's site (thanks again Dave), the chrome end plate has a painted endplate over it leaving only the bead of the end plate around its perimeter exposed. Right?
So mine has the chrome endplate but is missing the painted insert that covers all of the end plate except the bead.
Jud
J K Chapin

Jud - there is no insert. The end cap has the chrome bead masked off, the central panel is painted, then masking tape removed.

Yea, Tom. My typing is worse than my spelling.

One thing I always wonder how a show judge can miss it the brass ID tag. If you are going to go to all the trouble to restore the car, would it be a bit deal to have these nickel plated as original?
Bruce Cunha

If we want to nit pick it appears from multiple recent pictures of unrestored cars that the end tank panels were not even masked. It seems they were just sprayed from the inside out and only the sides were left chrome.

Most of us have masked ours and that leaves the entire raised edge chrome but also a hard edge where the masking tape was removed.

Chris Couper

Hey ...this one is "12 Volt!"
Don't you guys understand that is what drove the price up so high.

Is the Auster badge a repro?
Mine is backwards also (DPO) ...but very different in appearance.
David Sheward "IZZY" TF 7427

The Auster badges are repos when they are not etched. The repos are all just silk screened.
Chris Couper

The add states a California Black Plate car.
California Black plates are Black background and yellow letters , oh and California in miss spelt on the plate. Picky picky picky.

Check out the air cleaners- certainly not original. By the way, in 1950 if it was a California car, the plates would not have been black. That came later.

I hope they help raise the price of our cars though.

Ira
Ira Spector

Correct Ira. I think they would have been yellow with black letters. I think the black with yellow letters come out around 1960
Bruce Cunha

California black plates with yellow letters came out in 1951 but the wider format than you see today.
Chris Couper

I don't know about the end plates on TD's but on my TF they are only chrome on the very outer edge- there is no chrome on the center section and even the inner portion of the bead needs to be painted as in Chris Couper's photo because the chrome does not extend that far.
