MG TD TF 1500 - Pedal Box hole

Dear All,

I would like to ask what is this 2 hole on my MG TF 1500? What's the place is?

Thanks for your answers in advance.

The early TD's used a cable for the clutch link instead of the solid linkage. There was a brass fitting at the end of the cable that attached at the two holes.

Hello Tamas I utilized these two holes to fit a rubber shield to prevent road debris from entering the pedal box. The rubber shield has a center hole allowing the rod to move in either direction. John

Great idea John. Thanks for sharing.

John, Excellent idea! I wonder if there is a boot out there that i could slip over the rod and secure it to the box? Gotta look. My tub is off the frame and a good time to do this. Very interesting. Thanks John for the idea! PJ

Hello Paul The shield I fabricated consist of a piece of aluminum and a piece of rubber . Simply cut a piece of aluminum to cover the hole with sufficient material to overlap the two holes by approximately .250 all around . Follow this up by cutting a piece of rubber the exact size of the aluminum plate . Secure the two pieces together then cut the three holes . The center hole should have a diameter smaller than the rod for the rubber piece and slightly larger for the aluminum piece . Why aluminum? Non corrosive and easy to work with. John

Hi Tamas,

A PO fitted an early TD pedal box to your car. The previous one could have rusted or more likely originally RH drive? My TF 1500 is the same - brought back from the USA and did a swap with an early TD owner going to live in France - steering rack as well. Presumably no big hole in the bottom or pedal stop - see Archives. I've cut a hole in mine, but not bothered with the pedal stop!

Cheers,

John

If I'm not mistaken (and I often am) early TD's had a cable clutch system, and there was at that location the factory had fitted a rubber (leather?) dust shield.

Many have since replaced the cable with a solid adjustable actuator rod. The extra movement of the rod makes it pretty much incompatible with the original seal.

I'm thinking of adapting a bellows type seal on my TD 11973.

Thanks for your good ideas.

Hi Bob- on the cable arrangement there was no rubber or leather seal. There was a bracket that was an integral part of the clutch cable assembly - this bracket bolted up to the box and essentially sealed off that opening.

Tamas - your restoration work looks excellent - you are doing a wonderful job on the car.

Thanks for the clarification Jeff, makes sense.
When I got to my pedal box, all that remained were the two bolts in the holes and a piece of jagged metal under one of them. PO had rather ineptly removed it.
While it isn't purist, I'm going with the adjustable rod, and may try to adapt a rubber bellows (from a wiring harness off another project?) to seal things up.

I believe that until the end of the TF ALL T-series cars had bolt holes for the earlier clutch cable.

How about something like this early Chevy starter rubber. PJ

I just saw this post. I used a small bellows and keep it from sliding forward with a tie wrap. It compresses with the clutch rod movement. No need to secure it to the pedal box. It also covers up the 2 screw holes.

Mort , could you tell me a p/n or something ? If I go to the local Napa or hardware store I get the question : from what car? what year etc or do you have a p/n ? In other words , no knowledge present and they can only work the Computer.

Thanks in advance Gerard

I just ran across this pic - shows the original intent of these bolt holes.

Gerard,
I got the bellows from here.
