MG TD TF 1500 - Petrol tank sealing

I have just ordered a new petrol tank for my TD. Should I seal the inside
to prevent rust? If so what is recommended.
Many thanks,
Lionel.

I fitted a new fuel tank to my TD last year and sealed it with POR15 before installation. Available within the UK.

Thanks for your advice. I think I will do what you did.

LINEL,
Before you go and try to coat the inside of the tank, there were some good pictures posted on this forum of exactly is inside the tank. I will search to see if I can find them. It would be very worthwhile to look at them to see what is inside, and determine how to turn and rotate the tank to get as much coverage as you can,, Maybe some one here has easier access to the pictures,,,,

Go to Bud Kruegers excelent site,

Thanks for your comment and the link. Maybe I need to rethink.

Lionel,
Any coating in there is better than none at all,,,

Hi Lionel,

If you use tank sealant DO NOT plug the tank outlet with a threaded stud or bolt. I did this when I sealed the tank from my MG M Type (using an excellent product from Rustbuster) and the plug was locked solid when the sealant had dried. I had to drill the plug out and make a threaded bush.

Lionel, I believe some have had theirs zinc plated which I believe would be the best due to the fact you won't have to worry about modern gas eating it up.

I had the tank on our TD dipped in zinc phosphate. It left a rather toothy finish that should last almost forever. I did this after the sealer coating started to dissolve after nearly 20 years. Cheers - Dave

Lionel, I used the POR-15 system to clean, etch and coat the fuel tank of a 53 TD that I recently restored. I used a clever system developed by another contributor to this forum, Jon Levine to do it. Jon made two circular disks of 1/2" plywood about 24" in diameter, a few inches larger than the height of the tank. These were then attached to the tank via screws into the nuts welded onto the sides of the tank. A rubber stopper was used to seal the opening after the various fluids were inserted. The tank filler cap was taped so as not to flop around. A disk was screwed over the low fuel sensor opening and plumbing plugs were screwed into the fuel outlet holes. After inserting the appropriate liquid the tank was then sealed up and slowly rolled around and around for a while with an occasional end-over-end flip. Removing the plugs and screws was not a problem. Viewing the interior with a flexible bore scope (Jon's in the medical field)showed no areas that had not been covered. Worked for me, But YMMV. Bud

Hardware stores sell boat plugs and plumbing pressure test fittings for cheap that fit the fuel outlet and filler port respectively. Both are rubber..no worries about being bonded in place. I used bill hirsch's system. Regards, Tom

You type in the search engine for best fuel tank sealer this pops up from several different forum sites, etc. for whatever that is worth

Actually the rubber plugs Bud was referring to are the standard swimming pool outlet plugs, which have an expansion screw, which when tightened totally seal the filler neck and fuel gauge hole. They are black rubber andare easily removed, widely available and cheap
Jon Levine

Jon, the plumbing test plug and the boat drain hole are a couple bucks each, both rubber, the plumbing plug is available in fuel filler diameter and has a wing nut to expand the rubber donut and the boat drain plug just shoves in the hole and has a single throw over lever sealing the rubber plug in place..they come two to a package. Tom it would appear we're both talking about the same item, just two different applications, names and location in the store
Jon Levine

actually have a picture here it is

Thanks guys. As always very helpful. I now have a plan. I like the idea of
zinc plating, but am concerned as to how this may effect the exterior
finish. I think I will go with the POR 15 and Buds' chariot.
Lionel.
