MG TD TF 1500 - PLC6 TD & TF Knob Comparison
The pics below show four versions of PLC 6 knobs. The two on the left are identical. The first one is as it was when I acquired the switch. The second has just been lightly cleaned up but is yet to be buffed. The third is uncleaned & is quite different with the 45 degree handle. The fourth is also uncleaned, has the 45 degree handle but is different yet again. 1. FAR LEFT. Black knob, pointer, horizontal handle, brown body. Lock missing, chrome bezel with black painted face & silk screened white lettering. 2. SECOND FROM LEFT. Black knob, pointer, horizontal handle, black body. Lock FA 525, chrome bezel with black painted face & silk screened white lettering. 3. SECOND FROM RIGHT. Black knob, no pointer, 45 degree handle, black body. Lock FP 743, windowed chrome bezel, lettered disc beneath the window. 4. FAR RIGHT. Brown knob, very small pointer, 45 degree handle, black body. Lock FA 578, chrome bezel with cream face & brown silk screened lettering. Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |

Though difficult to see in either shot the brown pointer on Switch 4 has a small chip at the end of the pointer. I'm not sure what model this was off but the colour combo on the bezel is very Cream & Crackers. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter, The knobs without the pointer were originally used on PLC switches with the window. With the pointer used on no-window switches. If you ever come across one with a brown face and market ROTAX with a spade key switch, please let me know. |
Lew Palmer |
Thank Lew. The brown switch (No 4 above) with the tiny pointer was the one that I knew nothing about. If I see a ROTAX at the next big swap meet I'll grab it for you. I've pulled 4 switches apart now & the really odd thing is the circlip & keeper arrangement. On two of the switches the circlip sat on top of the reversed keeper yet on the other two the circlip was installed with the keeper enclosing it. They seem to work either way as all four switches were functioning. Do you have any thoughts on this? Also trying to find replacement insulating material in thin sheet form. Any suggestions? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter Contact a reputable motor rewinder, they should be able to assist as they use thin sheet insulation to wrap the field coils. I used to work for an instrument company that also operated in conjunction with a motor rewinder and they used these products extensively. Graeme |

be interesting maybe for you to know the number ident too?, I have 3 of these types of pointers, this one I can see the number, one is on the car so thats a no no, might be able to get another but need to figure how to get it apart, so easier for you.?![]() |

I was not aware of the number on the underside of the pointer Mog. I'll check out the knobs that I have. Not clear what you mean by the last bit. If you're unsure how to take apart & reassemble a PLC6 check out the thread "PLC6 Alternate Assembly Method". Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

this is a no 5, from a switch that is chrome surround, and a cream plastic dial.![]() |

Mog just buffing one of my knobs & saw the No 5 on the underside. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Just curious Peter, how did "TF" make it in to your title? Matthew. |
M Magilton |
Good question Matthew. TF should have read TC as the PO of No 4 believed it came from a TC. A typo I'm afraid. I still don't understand the cream & cracker colour combo? Cream bezel, brown lettering & brown knob. See pic. Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |
