MG TD TF 1500 - PRESSURE PLATE BOLTS
I have tried the archives, but can't find an answer,,, A Club member is having a rattle/vibration in his TF shift lever,, matalic sound, sometimes on excelleration,, he has checked all of the known possibilities; Checked the spring, Had the trannie taken appart, he's done a bunch of stuff, and we just can't figure it out,,, I seem to remember there was something about inteferance with long pressure plate bolts?? Possible hitting the block??? Does any one remember something like this??? Could it be the ring gear ?? SPW PS (use tubes in a wheel that was designed for tubes) |

Or How about pressure plate dowels being too long and protruding through the flywheel ????? SPW (use tubes in a wheel that was designed to use tubes) |
STEVE WINCZE |
Or an 8" clutch and a 7 1/4"-type gearbox housing? I have that combination and when I fitted a new clutch that had a slightly higher pressureplate housing, the whole engine/gearbox assembly jammed solid. The cure was to deepen the cutouts in the gearbox housing (the part where the release bearing shaft runs through). |

Steve, is this a sudden change? was there an ominous "bang" that christened the rattleIng? if the answers are "no", and since it is on acceleration, has he rechecked the engine timing? Regards, tom |
tm peterson |
No "bang",,, He purchased the car knowing of the noise,,, The PO told him of the noise when they were discussing the price,,,, and the price was "adjusted" accordingly. It can also be a trannie bolt that is too long touching the ring gear??? SPW (use tubes in a wheel that was designed to use tubes) |

A too long bell housing bolt makes a loud squealing/scraping sound, not gear lever chatter. Are you sure it isn't just a bad case of the usual lever chatter, caused by timing too far advanced or worn parts in the shifter housing? That can be really loud. How about a video with sound? George |

I had, in the past, an intermittent rattle from the bellhousing area that was caused by one of the keepers that holds the throw out bearing in place coming off. When it was being tossed around by the flywheel it was impossible to tell where the noise was coming from. |
Gene Gillam |
JUst my 2 cents worth, it could be timing. Try timeing it and see if that takes care of the problem. The rattle on the shift can be traced to this sometimes. |
Tom Maine |
steve, if it was a gearbox bolt, would that only be heard on acceleration? i am sticking with my original suggestion, as echoed by the other posters..check the timing. regards, tom |
tm peterson |
The Timing is set where it should be,, Gear box was taken apart and checked by a qualified mechanic,, SPW (use tubes in a wheel that was designed for tubes) |
STEVE WINCZE |
Steve, I can't tell from your explanation...has the transmission been removed from the car in search of the problem? Gene |
Gene Gillam |
Gene, Yes,, It was removed and rebuilt where necessary,,,including the shifter remote and spring SPW |
STEVE WINCZE |
Try this: while accelerating hard and it is rattling, press firmly forward on the shift lever and see if the noise stops or is greatly reduced. That will narrow things down a lot. George |
George Butz |
Yes, Andre has said that it is reduced,,,, |
STEVE WINCZE |
If gear lever pressure really reduces it, it is most likely just the gear lever chatter. You say the timing is correct. For diagnostic purposes, retard it a few degrees and see if the noise goes away. |
George Butz |
steve, when you say timing is set as it should be, how many degrees of advance at 3500rpm? static? what is the condition of the distributor? advance weights/springs? what is the condition of the engine/gearbox mounts and engine steady? regards, tom |
