MG TD TF 1500 - Prop Shaft Bolts

My prop shaft has Whitworth bolts on one end and metric on the other end, I assume the Whitworth bolts are original, are they? Here's a couple of pics. They measure out at 5/16 dia. and take a 1/4 Whitworth wrench, nut and bolt.PJ

This is what I have listed for the TD:

Thanks Chris, you answered my question, now I know the front bolts are correct being Whitworth as I suspected and the ones on the rear flange are wrong. PJ

The bolts are BSF (fine thread) not Whitworth. Originally Whitworth and BSF had different hex sizes but were standardised to conserve material during wartime. That is why the spanners are dual marked.
While serving my apprenticeship in the 50's some of the machines I worked on still had some of the old standard, confusing!

Thanks Ray, information was well received! It sure is confusing without a chart what thread was used and where on these old British cars. Paul

Found out the the High Gear type 2 conversion's drive shaft has an attached internal splined coupling and U joint to match the T-9 transmission on one the front end and the back has the normal flange, Meaning, I'll only need one set of bolts. PJ

Decided to use the old bolts as their in good shape but ordered new Philidas nuts from British Tools & Fasteners.PJ

Ray Lee - you have a valuable background - begging permission to ask you via Paul's thread: do you happen to know what was the thread on the Jackall tube nuts as featured on the Y Type ? - mine sit well in a Whitworth 24 TPI thread gauge, but I'm told they are not whitworth thread. Hope you might be able to help. Thanks Paul!
John.

John,
I am not sure but I seem to remember Enots made fittings with 14 tpi so you had to use their bits and pieces. Now they only do BSP and metric.
It was common for companies to use N/S threads so you had to go to them. I served my time in an Anglo-Dutch company, so Imp,Metric and one offs, it was a nightmare.
It might be helpful to mail Neil Cairns.

This is an Octagon MG Car club contact but I am sure he would help.

Thank you Ray - I've emailed Neil. I shall of course post any definitive info, as it will be of interest to any Y restorers.
