MG TD TF 1500 - Proposed 4,000 Miler

The itinerary is still written in pencil, but the goal is to drive Lazarus to Texas in time for my brother's 85th birthday on May 19th. Present plans are something like this:

Load a case of OSH in the boot
5/13 Leave home, Plymouth MA for Quantico VA (514 miles)
5/14 Visit USMC Museum, drive to Greensboro NC (275 miles)

5/15 Drive to daughter's in Marietta GA (340 miles)
5/16 Drive to Shreveport LA (605 miles)
5/17 Drive to niece's in Hearne TX (223 miles)
stay through 5/19
5/20 Drive to Guthrie OK, have a sip of single malt with Hiram Kelley (365 miles)
5/21 Drive to Dan Craig's in Springfield MO with a stop for an OSH with Paul Jennings in Peggs OK (277 miles)
5/22 Drive to somewhere in Indiana with a quick stop at Jim Merz's, in St. Louis (about 380 miles)
5/23 Drive to Dave Sheward's in Thornville OH to tap a few OSH's that we owe each other (spending the night) (290 miles)
5/24 Drive to Red Lion PA to spend the night with the folks who bought 'the53' last year (370 miles)
5/25 Head home (425 miles)

Adds up to about 4,064 miles in 13 days. Longest single leg is about 605 miles.

As I said, it's subject to change. Hopefully, the 62 year old TD and its 79 year old driver are up to it. Gee, that's a combined 141 car*driver years, or some 573,000 (car+driver)*miles. Bud

Going solo??

Wow! What's the rush? Post from the road ala LaVerne. Good reading...

Those 5 and 6 hundred miles days are too much for me. Figuring you average 60 mph (which you won't) thats 10 hrs plus in the saddle. That said, I found it quite satisfying to rack up the miles in my cross country quests. I learned another thing on my last cross country deal. Hotel reservations can be a good thing when you roll into the middle of nowhere South Dakota at dusk during the Corn Palace Festival. Nothing to be found in town or in Sioux City 100 miles on down the road. I had to back track 50 miles and was happy to get a room in the only flea bag place in town.

I'm with Ed. Post pictures and commentary along the way.
MG LaVerne

Bud,
When you get to drive through the beautiful Garden State of New Jersey I am right off exit 8a of the turnpike. The guest room is always ready and you are welcome anytime.
My pleasure,
Mort
Mort 50 TD (Mobius)

Yup, going solo, Jud. When we got married in '58 my wife got to experience TD'ing from MA to CA. No more of those for her.
The rush, Ed, is that we're going to be in CA from 5/1 thru 5/6. I'm committed to do my Warden job at the Town Election on May 10. The 11th is Mother's Day. Need a day to catch my breath. Returning, I do NOT want to be on the road on Memorial Day, 5/26.
Mort, if I'm in a pinch on the return trip, I might just be thinking of taking you up on that offer come Memorial Day weekend.
Just picked up a semi-smart cell phone. I'll see if I can't work out something with someone to do some trip reporting. I have yet to send a text message or transmit an image. But, the phone is free on Wi-Fi. Bud
Bud Krueger

Hello Bud
Really looking forward to meeting in person.
I've got some Balvenie Caribbean Cask for special occasions such as this,or if that don't fit your pistol, I've got The Glenlivet 12 as well.
See you in May.

Ok Bud. The door is always open.

Bud, I guess you will be on I85 from Greensboro to Marietta. Carnesville is on 85 about 15 miles across the SC State line. Would love to buy you lunch, coffee, whatever. Larry
Larry Brown

Bud, That is a fantastik Journey. Here in Europe we can't Imagines for such Long distances. We are proud to go to Italy this may. That makes ca. 800 Miles in 3 Days.
Klaus
Klaus Harthof

No promises, Larry, but how about sending me some contact info via my email address above?

Gee, Klaus, a lot of it is running on highways modeled after your Autobahns. But, I really wish I had more time so that I could do the whole thing on back roads. Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud,
A very ambitious undertaking. As you drive through Birmingham, Alabama on your way to Shreveport on the 16th, I am a 100 miles to your North. If the need arises (which I know it won't), don't hesitate to contact.
Patrick

That's a lot of driving!
Patrick Earles

Thanks, Patrick (I still miss your old avatar). Could you drop me a note off-forum to give me your contact information (which we know I won't need). Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud,
All I can contribute is thus...have X-Country New jersey to Idaho and back to New Hampshire in the TD...most enjoyable...UNTIL I tried over 400 miles in a day (unavoidable going through Wyoming & Montana)...if you can look at keeping it to 400 miles or less...any more really starts to hurt...I'd break up that leg to Shreveport in half & add another day...
Have Fun!

Sounds great, places we dream about visiting, one day maybe.

Have a good one Bud

Sharon and I are looking forward to your visit-sounds like a marathon in the making. Good to see you could split up that TX to MO run - we'll leave the light on. Dan

Is there an "Iron Butt" award / recognition for NE MG T Register, Ltd members for total miles traveled all through the course of a riding season? A 4,000 mile trip is a haul for anyone in a modern car let alone a 60+ year one plus the additional miles Bud will put on the odometer this year with his TD.

I believe I’ve read there is recognition for a GOF for most miles traveled.

Just an idea to keep these cars more on the road and get the exposure for these British sport cars year round – weather permitting of course.

If a certain mileage milestone is reached, their names get mentioned in the TSO at the end of the year… maybe get a lapel pin or something of the sort….

I am relatively new to the NE MG Register but not to MG’s…. maybe there is something of the sort but I am unaware of it.

Frank, there is such an award. We call it "Miles of Smiles". I will be handing out the 2013 awards to the recipients at GOF MK 95 in Middlebury.

Some folks are expressing concern about my proposed 605 mile day. You might want to dig out your December 2004 TSO and read about my Cleveland trip (in Lazarus). Straight home on the last day, 715 miles. The trip is on Ttalk as http://www.ttalk.info/Tech/OldFriend.htm Bud
Bud Krueger

I've done a few long days in the Green Hornet. :-)
MG LaVerne

Lazarus and I are not about to attempt to emulate the incomparable LED & The Green Hornet. Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud

Sounds like a great trip. Way more than I would attempt at 73. Been pondering this for several days, what is a case of OSH?

And Bud, I'd say you are right in line with some of my journey's...wish I was going with you.
MG LaVerne

Bud,

You're obviously in good shape - congratulations.

When I drove my TF to Gatlinburg in 2006 for the big MG International, my kids had a bloody fit. I was 73. Now I'm driving to the 50th Anniversary GOF in Middlebury in June and I'm 81. Now, my daughter insists on accompanying me. I told her if she must baby-sit me, she must do so in her own MG (she has 3), so she's going to drive behind me (of course) in "Jack", her MGB.

Bud,

If at all possible, ya gotta drop in and see Larry Brown in Carnesville. Larry has just dodged "The BIG Bullet" and is now on the mend.

He's easy to reach - just off I85.

When I was last there, he was restoring a YA.

He's practically on the roadway. Just about right for a last stop before getting to my daughter's in Marietta.
Larry, I can't seem to locate your contact info. Could you send it to me at my email address above? Thanks. Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud,

If no response from Larry, let me know.

I have what you need,

Bud, if you want to go about 1200 miles out of your way, there's free beer in Tucson!

Testing new cheap semi-smart $59 tablet. Bud
Bud Krueger

Testing new cheap semi-smart....

But I didn't study... :-)
MG LaVerne

Well, at least the message got here. This should allow me to post the trip happenings as long as I can find some Wi-Fi spots. Love the 'Jelly Bean' OS. Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud, looks like a great adventure. Wish you a safe trip and very pleasant travelling although some of those daytrips are very long ones. Good luck, Huib
Huib Bruijstens

Scheduled to hit the road two weeks from tomorrow. Must admit that the monstrous weather conditions in the TX, OK, KS, MO, LA, MS neck of the woods is rattling my cage. TDs are not the best machines in which to ride out thunderstorms, not to mention tornadoes. The trip is still on, but the itinerary is still in pencil. Nothing like a bit of anxiety. Thanks for all of the support folks. Bud
Bud Krueger

In the words of FDR... the only thing you have to fear....

Best wishes Bud. May this be the journey of a lifetime.
MG LaVerne

Bud; Find a decent weather radar app on that new phone. Great asset on cross country travel - particularly during storm season. See ya then, Dan
Dan Craig

A little while ago there was a thread about a good quality driving hat, not a cap. I can't find it. Family is suggesting that I should get one. Anybody recall the brand? I was planning on setting a record for miles under one of LED's Whitworth Nuts caps, but now NOAA is talking about lots of 100 degree stuff. Bud.
Bud Krueger

Bud, I'm not pushing the John Deere cap but for whatever hat you decide on, I strongly recommend adding the Foriegn Legion rear flap. It's an essential accessory for our wonderful southern driving weather.

Jud

J K Chapin

Thanks,Jud, I'd never seen that before. I could still wear my Nuts cap. Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud, you should see if you can publish maps of your trip from your tablet...
Re: hats; Outdoor Research sells a baseball style cap with removable French Foreign Legion style apron. I know this because I have four of the aprons but only one hat. They are easy to lose. But good for neck coverage. Have a handy neck strap to choke you with in high winds, too.
Geoffrey M Baker

LOts of hats with the flap in the fishing industries, try Cabelas, Bass Pro or Gander Mountain. Even LL Bean..
Tom Maine

Y'all think the commercial world can improve on my three-safety-pin technique? :-)
J K Chapin

While we're on the subject of caps (Bud won't need this for his trek), my neighbor got tired of seeing me pull out in December and january wearing my orange toboggan and ski shell so he bought me this. Regular 430 on sale at Northern Hydraulics for $10. It's canvas and not leather but still, compare that to the RAF helmet offered by M. I bought a second one for the passenger.

Winter - Bring it on!!

Jud, you look more like me than I look like me!

Gepff, I'm surprised that my $54 tablet is even letting me read/post this BBS. Don't think that 'Jelly Bean' can select stored images. I'm just hoping that places that I'll b stopping at have a Wi-Fi that'll let me keep this up on a new thread. Bud
Bud Krueger

Started loading the car. Priority items first. Bud

Bud Krueger

Oh Ya.
MG LaVerne

Heck Bud...that's all you need...4000 miles on OSH!!
Bob Dougherty

Plan to share some with some folks along the way. But, gotta' be sure to save a few for Dave Sheward. Must check the archives and see how many times we've said 'owe you an OSH'. Pray for some decent weather. Don't want to shake up the OSH. Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud, you may be making a big mistake loading the OSH first. Load all the non-essentials like shaving kit and changes of clothes and stuff and then the OSH so you can get to it quickly without unpacking when you get here.

Jud
J K Chapin

Bud. I know you are getting anxious. Looking forward to meeting you. My cell is 434 258 7516.
Will meet you on the 85 at Wendy's as I know time is valuable. Most of all, be safe!
Larry Brown

So what mpOSH are you planning for?
