MG TD TF 1500 - Push Rod Repair Advice Needed

I need to reattach the cup end of a tappet push rod and wondered if brazing is the best approach. The rod and upper cup piece are still attached - but have the common problem that we often find where the end snaps as it cycles through the up and down movements.

Just wondering if brazing is the best approach. Neither the rod nor the cup are distorted from the earlier movement.

Thanks in advance
DLD

I just do a quick tack weld in one spot, and have never had one come loose. I suspect you might have trouble getting all the old oil out for adequate brazing.

DLD,

I agree with Tom, I just do two MIG tack welds, opposite one another. It's a good idea to check all of your pushrods, not just the one that has parted. It's more common for the end to just come loose once the engine has warmed up, producing a quite loud tapping that many have found hard to pin down! I've mentioned loose cup ends as a possible source of this noise on previous threads, but didn't seem to get much response!

I would not braze as the braze repairs are brittle. Regards, tom

I soft silver soldered a couple of mine that were loose, I had to burn out the oil and buff the area to be soldered prior to applying the flux.

Ensure the cup end is fully seated prior to attempting the repair other wise the solder is being exposed to a "shearing moment" and will fail.

Tom, John, Mr. Peterson, and Graeme,

Thanks so much for your helpful comments and advice. I will have the rods MIG welded as mentioned. Graeme I appreciate your comment on making sure the cup is properly positioned - it is interesting that the cup seems to pop up from the rod on its own when not pressed down.

I will pull the rocker assembly today and check the other rods for additional loose ends.

Thanks again,

DLD

Make sure you roll the rods on a flat surface while they are out to make sure they are straight.

If you locate a good welder, he'll probably TIG weld them. Thorough cleaning should take a lot longer than the tacks.
