MG TD TF 1500 - pushrod tube

Good day to all,

I am beginning to reassemble my engine and I hadn't noticed until now that the machine shop had removed the pushrod tubes from the head. I'm sure this was necessary in order to hot tank the head, but I just hadn't noticed it. I have a couple of questions:
1) Is there any correct way to reinstall them? Can I just tap or press them in from the bottom?
2) Should I seal the top and bottom in the head in any way, or just press them in like they are?
3) Are they flared on both the top and bottom, meaning that I might need some way to flare the top if I installed them from the bottom? Each one is flared on one end.

Thanks for any help you can give,
Jim Smith

Jim, I would take it back to the machine shop and have them re-install the tubes. They have to be done correctly or they can leak. PJ

Thanks PJ,
That seems to be the best advice. I think I'll let the machine shop deal with it. Annoying, but necessary

There is no reason to remove the tubes to clean a head. I suspect the shop didn't realize they were simply holes for the push rods to go through.

Jim,

I agree with Steve, these should have never been removed. I hope that they are all undamaged as they are considered an integral part of the head and therefore not available as a spare part.

Well John, they are not all perfect. I hope the shop has a solution. They all might be reusable, but if not, couldn't a shop just source tubes of the right O.D. and I.D and install them pretty easily? It seems like a simple tube with a simple flare.
