MG TD TF 1500 - Question about TF timing chain cover bolt hole

Hi Guys

I have a question about the holes in my timing chain cover where it attaches at the bottom to the sump.

Both holes on either side are threaded and the bolts goes through the sump into these holes.

One threaded hole in the cover is enclosed but the other is open inside the cover and angled with a jagged edge.

I am wondering did somthing break off in my case.

Will oil seap out past the bolt.

The new bolt I have is too short and hardly catches the threads a longer bolt would do the job but will come through into the interior of the cover.

Is this all normal or should I be trying to get this hole welded!

You can see the jagged hole in the picture at the top with the gold bolt in it above the semi circle opening.

Thanks in advance.

Every one I've seen looks like that. Yes, it can leak oil past the threaded bolt if not well sealed. I always install Heli-Coil type thread inserts in the two lower holes of the cover because the original aluminum treads do not hold up well.
The timing chain can slap against that area of the cover if it is worn and the tensioner not working well. (make sure oil pressure hole in tensioner is clear).
The bolt you use should not extend too far into the cover or it may contact the timing chain.

I second all of Richard's advice.

Thank you very much Richard and George just what I wanted to hear.

Darryl,

I have found the Time Sert brand for the 'helicoil' to be the best for the timing cover. They are made in USA from memory and come in a kit for fitting up. They are threaded on the outside and inside making for a strong unit. Of course, these can also be used in the aluminium
sump's flange/bell housing area to good effect. (MG was a little
lax in this area expecting the aluminium threads to hold up the suspended gearbox/motor ! )

Thanks Rob I will check those out.

I have found the inserts (Keen Sert is another brand) work much better than Helicoil. They make a permanent repair and don't back out when you remove the bolt. They do require a larger hole which doesn't always work out.

Chrislynn Rock Solid inserts are my favorite for that application; I've never had one fail. Made in Maine!
