MG TD TF 1500 - Rad Surround hood buffer

So the question for today is what is the correct material for the hood buffer that weaves in the radiator surround.

Clausager has TD pictures in his new book with Cloth buffer. The factory picture I have shows the buffer as textured, but I can't zoom in enough to tell if it is woven cloth or just textured rubber.

Here is where it gets odd. Moss UK, Brown and Gammons, and Anglo Parts UK all sell this buffer as a woven cloth. NTG shows a woven cloth for all T's except the TF. For the TF they show a rubber buffer (BTW, this is a much more correct thickness than the Moss US rubber buffer).

Moss US, and Abingdon both have rubber buffers listed for the TD and the TF. From the Frame Up carries both with rubber listed for all T's but woven for the TA and TB (note says "Optional period item)

Chris Cooper's site for TD's has a few pictures, but only a few that are clear enough to tell if it is woven. His pictures for later TD's appear to show rubber. On his TF site, all the TF's have what appears to be rubber.

Chris feels the TD had a textured rubber. (perhaps a rubber-coated woven material?). Bill Chasser's TD 5779 has cloth and Bill said a friend's TD was cloth.

I purchased both from NTG, but would love input on what others that have original TD's or restored an original TD have.

I went with the cloth, primarily based on that Bill Chasser's 5779 has cloth. We know this car was in a garage since 1962.

I went with the NTG woven buffer. It is a gray color and the only reference I have on what the original looked like is the various T's in Clausagers book. All the early T's before the TD had a tan/natural color buffer, but that may be due to age.

I even was able to get the knot in the bottom (not shown in the picture)

The factory SPL's for both TD and TF list rubber.

All the TA/TB/early TC webbings I have seen were off white.

TC and earlier use webbing. TD and later use rubber.
Lew Palmer

That seems to be what we are finding Lew. Bill Chasser's TD 5779, which is a barn find that has not been on the road since 1962/64 has cloth.

So the change was after this TD (Jan 1951)

All TFs - rubber.
