MG TD TF 1500 - Radiator/Bonnet Adjustment

Hello all,

Looking for guidance on adjusting my 1951 MG TD radiator. With the bonnet sitting all the way back up against the rubber strip in front of the windshield, there is app. 1.5" gap between the front of the bonnet and the correct location on the radiator. This obviously isn't affecting the ride but looks bad and would love to fix.

The two connector rods on either side appear to have threads that will shorten them, but I need to know if there are other bolts/screws that need to be loosened and/or adjusted as well, I'm wary to just start moving the radiator towards the proper placement since there are belts and the like to contend with.

Any guidance is much appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
1 1/2 inches it quite a bit. The adjustment on the rods should take careof the 1 1/2 space, but If I remembers correctly, the holes in the cross member that the rad sits on are not symmetrical, front to back. If it is not orientated correctly, the holes might be too for foward, and there for the rad will be too far forward.

I just shot this of mine (TD). The mount holes are indeed off center, so if your frame member got turned around, I measured, that'll give you about .5" movement to the front.

This member is just about the same front to back, pretty easy to turn it around upon re-installation.

Here's my rad support, notice the crank guide in front is the narrow side. This is a TF, but I think their all the same orientation in the TD and TF series. The two rad mounting holes are toward the back. PJ

Agree with the above. The gap does seem excessive but this is the first thing I'd check. I had the reverse problem as my bonnet appeared to be too long. Cheers

I had to turn my radiator mounting bracket around.
It now appears to be opposite the "Accepted" orientation.
However I have found other TD's that are indeed this way. I understand the bonnet was hand "fitted" to each car.

My fan just clears, its an MGB fan.

I had to add shims under the drivers side radiator mounting to center the radiator.
The clevis-like adjusters on the rods will tilt the top only. If the bottom of the bonnet has a gap you will need to look at the radiator mounting bracket.
You will then need to look at the bottom gap an see if its the same on both sides and tilt the radiator at the mounting bracket to even it up.

Steve,

Here is a photo of my radiator bracket.

You will see that the holes are offset towards the rear of vehicle. This sh*t cause about a one inch shift towards the rear from a bracket that is reversed.

You will also notice that on the face of the flange facing forward, there are curved reliefs so your fingers can access the nuts on the bottom of the radiator.
