MG TD TF 1500 - Radiator Mount Studs

The radiator mount studs are very worn - threads damaged by PO.

Suggestions for replacements? The thick neck - is that soldered to the bottom bracket or are these studs actually bolts through spacers?

Can studs be drilled out - new ones threaded and soldered in place?

I see that there has been no response to your post above. So I will attempt to provide some info.

My old rad is 'apart' and I have attached a picture of it the lower mounting bracket - looking at it from the side against the radiator lower tank. It appears that the "...thick neck..." has a rectangular piece welded to the inner / upper end and it is then inserted through a hole in the bracket and the rectangular piece is welded to the inside of the bracket (i.e. the side against the radiator lower tank). I don't think the bracket has been modified / molested - I've owned the car since the summer of 1968.

The threads on the studs are 3/8" X 20 BSF - I tried a 3/8" X 20 BSF die on it and I could screw it on with my fingers.

don't even use them on my 51. that radiator ain't going nowhere. i know this is hearsay but our Guru, Bob Figenskau said to me once why use em that rad is held in by other things, hood, hose, upper brackets,so he never used them on TD's Either.

If the radiator isn’t firmly stabilized upon the crossmember it’ll allow flexing of the wings leading to stress crack formations. It will also damage the radiator shell that is allowed to chaff against the apron. There are reasons that parts are engineered a certain way. Take away the engineering and it’ll lead to other issues.

I know that there are a few fittings, nuts and bolts that are a real PITA to put back as the factory intended, but I look at it this way, if it took 60/70 years to need repair, I would assume the factory had a pretty damn good idea from the beginning! I used no short cuts when restoring or maintaining my cars. But that's just me.
