MG TD TF 1500 - Radiator Stay

I was just looking at figure A27 in the WSM and noticed that in that picture the radiator stay appears to be on the outside of the anchor point on the firewall (scuttle?). Mine is on the inside - see attached picture. Should it be on the outside? That would allow an inch or so of extra access to the distributor etc. Thanks. Jud

MY stays are definitely on the outside.
I think you will have a carburetor clearance problem if you try to put them on the inside on the other side of the car.

Thanks. My right hand stay is on the outside because when I recently installed it I found it was going to be a real bear to get it on the inside like the left hand one and it appeared that I would have a carburetor/air cleaner (I have pancakes) interference. I'm pleased to know that, through no fault of my own, I got the right side right and my PO got the left one wrong. The left side will be (I think/hope) fairly easy to change. Jud

I am in the middle of restoring my 54 TF and have just attached the stays on the inside. Obviously need to rethink this. May I ask a question about the rubber fixings for the radiator support. I seams to me the 2 connectors should have 2 rubber rings with the metal rings around them on top of the support bracket rather than 1 either side. I want to get this right as it could affect my panel placement later. Thanks

On the TD the stays go to the outside. Picture from my website. Easy two minute fix.

Warmly,

Mr. Lamb, My rubber washers with the rings around them are set with one on top of the rad support and one below. This way it gives the radiator some flexibility, not much, but it also helps relieve shock to the radiator when hitting bumps in the road. Is it correct, don't know if it came that way originally, but it makes sense to hold down some of the vibration. Expansion of the rubbers holds the rings in place. PJ

Thanks Paul I didn't feel there was enough of the enlarged part of the bolt coming through the hole to attach the second rubber washer underneath but I must give it a go when I am moving my stays from the inside to the outside!
D Lamb

Paul: You are correct. One on top and one below.
