MG TD TF 1500 - Rear axle bearings - Quailty?

Coming back from a British Car Show today, my axle bears started to make rude noises.

On several occasions I have been warned not to buy certain bearings from certain countries.

Can anybody give some advice on this, please?

Gord, I checked my old bearings that Dave Clark replaced with new ones and new axles when he converted my rear to a 4.1. The old bearings, which are in good condition have writing on the outer races, I can't remember what the new bearings are as it happened before yesterday, I think Timkin! The stamping on the old bearings is as follows. ENGLAND - RHP - A MJ11/4. It's the only markings I could find, which is probably not what your after. I would check with Doug at "From The Frame Up" and get his opinion on the new ones. PJ

Gord,
Go for a premium brand e.g. SKF, FAG, NTN, or Timken. Make sure you get the correct tolerance. That is important. Be vary of far eastern bearigs.
The original bearing was RMS10/MJ1-1/4.
Outside Diameter: 79.38mm = 3-1/8 inch
Inside Diameter: 31.75mm = 1-1/4 inch
Width: 22.23mm = 7/8 inch

Good advice from both of you. This is exactly what I have been looking for.

Many thanks.

Ditto Declan!

BTW when you purchase a SKF bearng you must sign the invoice that you will not be sending it to Russia!)

I would also suggest you get sealed bearings on one or both sides would be better. Does away with oil leaks into the brake areas

So I go to Wych Bearings and find two almost-identical bearings. One is £88.54 and the other is a ‘budget’ bearing at £12.23 See:- https://www.wychbearings.co.uk/mj1-1-4_rhp.html And https://www.wychbearings.co.uk/MJ1-14-Budget.html

Can the difference in quality be that great? I know almost nothing about bearings. Need help.

Gord, you might want to contact Tom Lange and see what bearings he's using in the Jerry Austin/Dave Clark rear end upgrade systems that he's inherited from Dave. See http://www.ttalk.info/HalfShaftReplacement.htm. The upgrades have an outstanding reputation. Contact Tom at tlange@acadia.net Bud

Good suggestion Bud,

I've been able to locate a set locally, as our guy here has all old bearings in stock $110 for the bearings and seals.

Again, many tnx to all.

Len,

Had to take what I could get. I wanted quality. These are English SKF, but not sealed. They were available locally and affordable. German bearings were $225/set not including seals; plus shipping, duty, etc. I paid $110 Canadian - all incl.

At an early point, I considered sealed bearings, but my inexperience said that perhaps the seal material might not withstand the heat of the environment, and rejected the idea.

The worn bearings are 69 years old and have over 350,000 miles on them. I'm just hoping these replacements will outlast me (I'm 90!)

Gord - I usually tell people that if their old bearings ae still good to re-use them, as they are unlikely to find replacement bearings of equal quality.

I also suggest people get open bearings, as that way they can be sure of adequate lubrication from the diff. People are often surprised to learn that sealed bearings are NOT sealed for life, and must be checked, cleaned and re-lubricated from time to time. I have unwrapped new sealed bearings and found they contain only a VERY small amount of very stiff grease.

Well Tom, it looks like you're right again. The new bearing are in and running and all is well. But I must say that I can't see any wear on the old ones. They spin freely, and without any end play.

If someone wants them, they're available for postage.
