MG TD TF 1500 - Rear Axle Problem

Hi

Driving the other day I had a graunching noise from the rear, so I limped home and set about looking for the problem. Diagnosed as a right side rear wheel bearing breaking up. I tried removing the half shaft but it refused to budge, So I removed the rear axle to get at it better, still no joy. I have since taken the axle apart ground off the old wheel bearing hoping that I could remove the differential complete with axle and diagnose stuboness from there. Absolutely no joy, the shaft won't move neither will the diff. Desperate any ideas?

That's a bit special Barry
I've had the end of axles weld themselves to the cross pin before but that doesn't explain why the centre won't come out
If the axle has welded to the pin, when you rotate the axle the whole centre will want to turn with it at the same speed
If it spins free it must be stuck in the spline (unusual) probably a twisted spline
The whole lot should come out together though, it will only be the fit of the bearing in the housing holding it
Maybe get someone to support the weight of that exposed c/w carrier and give the end of the driveshaft a good whack with a decent sized block of wood- it 'should' pop out

Hi William

Thanks for the reply. After my lunch I went back out to the garage and gave it a severe talking to and as you say a couple well placed whacks and a threat, out it popped like there wasn't a problem. That's 4hrs of effort.

Barry,
Well done! If your half shafts are the problem, I have a set of good original half shafts here.

I am by our pool in Menorca at the moment and have absolutely nothing to do so replying to BBS threads is keeping me sane. If you are having problems pulling out the outer race of a bearing try running a MIG weld bead round the inner face. As it cools it will pull the race in and it will drop out without any damage to the housing.

I highly recommend buying a new set of alloy axles and replace the originals while you have it apart. This will alleviate the risk of snapping the old axles.you don’t want to do this job again in the future risking the chance of further damage to the ring and pinion brim broken axle bits. Peace of mind and well worth the expense. Tom Lange took over the axle business for TD/TF. I presume Y types of the same vintage as well.

Hi

The axles are quite new, so I checked the splines and took off a couple of high spots with wet and dry paper, test fitted with no problems. I really don't know what the problem could have been. Parts ordered so hopefully back together in a few days.

thanks

Barry,
I think this is just tied into the problem you had with the bodged halfshafts earlier this year. The end of the spline will have distorted the spider gear hobbing slightly, a few miles will soon loosen it up.

Yeah
Now ,when you go to reassemble it could just be that the axle is a tiddle too long, you will need to poke it in without the bearing on it and have a good measure up to make sure there isn't any preload on the bearing when it's fitted
Because the bearing has died and the axle was jammed in there it sort of points towards the axle being too long and loading it all up

William,
see the archive 2019 "Differential operation" and you will see what Barry went through.
It was a popular mod when halfshafts became hard to come by. Only a small percentage of T Types stayed in the UK so used parts were hard to come by.

Hi Ray

You obviously read all the posts well, you are quite right re. botched half shafts. I checked the female splines on the differential they looked fine so it was just a clean up of the half shafts.

William the half shafts are the correct ones for the axle, purchased from a reputable source.

Hi

Just to finish off this thread, replace rear axle bearings and oil seals everything back together and a 50km drive with no problems. Result.
