MG TD TF 1500 - rear brake

looking for a picture of the rear brake system. I'm looking mainly for the Beehive Springs how to install them. Can somebody post a Pictures, please.

Well, here's my shots
You need to make sure the beehive springs are correctly latched to the mount hole on the back plate.
When my car came back from Florida there was a tinkling sound from the rear drum. Turns out beehive spring had come free????? I can only guess but I think someone could not work out how the hand brake worked and had moved the car with it on.
Anyway, the result was the Abutment piece the shoes mount on Broke and had to be replaced. Thank you, Octagon Car Club. Who had them in stock.

Rod Jones

Earlier cars did not use them and have no provision on the back plates to install them.

I should also add that the back plates are handed and should you get them on the wrong sides you will find it most difficult to engage the springs and if you do (I did once) the brakes will hang up.

Where can you look to see which is which? Is there an identifier? I just re-did my rear brakes, and about to install the hub/drums. I was not aware there was a difference, as they look identical, so now I'm not sure if they installed in the proper location. DARN!

The part number followed by "RH" or "LH" is stamped on the rear of the plate, therefore visible with the brake drum in place.

My above comment on the position of the marking was from memory and is incorrect. It should be

The part number followed by "RH" or "LH" is stamped on the inside of the plate and requires removal of the drum and shoes to read it.
Sorry for the confusion. If you look closely at some of the above pictures you can just see these markings.

John.

Jim I don't have a photo of the markings but as John says ...there is an LH and RH stamped very lightly into the backplate. I had a 50/50 chance on getting them right on the TF ...which I did. When I did the TD a few years later I got them wrong and that was when I learned that they are handed. It's also true of the front back plates as well. I also never realized that the rear spring mounts weren't centered. Again a 50/50 chance and one the TF I got them mounted correctly...on the TD later I had to remove them and turn them around.

Fortunately, as luck would have it, the back plates were re-installed on the proper sides. I did find the stamped numbers for the right side. (they were pretty light..on mine the RH looks like R4) Thanks for bring that little detail to light!

Dumb stupid question (I should know this, blame it on senior moment(s)) but the RH, LH "handedness".

I assume that's not bolt thread direction but side of the car the plate goes on.
So that RH is meaning going on the right hand side (ie passenger side of a LHD car, ie US)? LH goes on the driver side of left hand drive car?
