MG TD TF 1500 - Rear Brake Shoes Replacement
When installing new shoes on the rear end, the brake drum would not fit over the shoes. The adjuster was at the minimum and still did not fit. Any thoughts? |

Try with the hand brake cables removed from the lever on the rear cylinders. Even with the handbrake lever right down the cables may be pulling om the cylinder levers and pushing the top pistons up a bit. Cheers, Hugh Pite |

Try comparing the new shoes with the old ones. I had a batch that was 3/8" too wide. We had to grind them down to fit. Maybe other defective sets are out there |

back "in the day" it was common to have replacement shoes oversize and then have them "fitted" or ground to mate your exact drums. Mine were done that way. Jim B. |

Did you try tapping the shoes around the circumfrence? It might be that they are not centered around the axle, and a bit of tapping around whist also tapping on the drum might help in centering everything????? SPW |

Thanks for the suggestions. I was using the old shoe frames with new linings so the curvature should be OK. Solution was to grind the one end of the shoes until I could get the hub on. I have restored 3 MG TDs and found the problem in all 3. |

"Old shoe frames new shoes so curvature should be ok" I don't believe that is a true statement if the drums show any significant wear . Regards, Tom |
