MG TD TF 1500 - Rear End Axles

Hi,

I have acquired a rebuilt rear end with MGA gearing & without axles. I must return my current one as a core. When I removed the axles out of my current rear end, I labeled them left & right. Does it matter if I maintain the left/right configuration when I install them in the rebuilt rear end?

Best regards,
Michael

Yes it does. The axles will develop a slight twisting and if you reverse the twist they will be more suseptible to snapping in two.

Flog the old ones on ebay and buy some of the new unbreakable ones! Sort of pence wise an pound foolish to do a new MGA geared rear end and use old stock axles.

Michael - If you got the rear axle from Dave Clark, he also sells the newer heavy duty axles half shafts that Jerry Austin used to sell. His (Dave's) price for the half shafts is quite reasonable, and you won't need to worry about snapping a half shaft somewhere down the road. Cheers - Dave

I just installed my new rear axle, I used a set of Dave's half shafts when I put everything together. I had the car out yesterday, top down in eastern Canada, and I am very happy with the difference in the car. Much more relaxed, I don't feel much difference in acceleration. Not enough to worry about anyway.
The half shafts I took out of my original, one was a replacement, and had marks on it like someone hammered the half shaft getting the outer end bearings in place. Both showed some distress on the splines on the inner end.
I'll probably sell them, as Dave's half shafts look unbreakable.

Talking about axles reminds me, I had a buddy years ago who use to say they should have put an axle carrier over the gas tank rather than the spare tire carrier, since on the T-series a broken axle was by far the more common event!

Michael, magna flux them.
I did 12 years ago, no problems, 1 OEM? & one from Germany.
But the new one are made from better material, as are many specialty parts.

The new design is not just a material difference. By removing the gradual taper along the shaft it allows for the full length of the half shaft to twist and eliminates much of the load and twist being driven to the splines in the differential carrier. There are other differences well explained in Buds' ttalk here http://www.ttalk.info/HalfShafts.htm by the late Jerry Austin who developed the new design. A number of other tech articles on the half shafts and rear end conversions can be found on Buds' website as well as a treasure trove of other information.

I would encourage those on the East side to check with me on the freight from Arizona if they're interested in an axle conversion. It's only about $30 more than for me to send it to California.

When you reinstall your old ones, or opt for new axles- don't forget to match front & back studs- left and right hand threads.

kylemorley,
The spare halfshaft, with bearing, nut, cotter and drum puller fit nicely in the side curtain compartment,, It should have been called a Spares Compartment!
