MG TD TF 1500 - Rear Mudguards (Fenders)

I'm respraying my rear guards & have two very different details where the guards abut the rear pan. I'm attaching 4 pics. The 2 with the primer are the left hand side. Can anyone tell me which is correct? Or do I need to take the hammer & dolly to both of them?
Cheers

Looks like someone backed up a little to close to something. JMHO. PJ

Peter: I am not sure what you are asking. The indentations are to clear the rear leaf spring shackles and are in fact hidden by the rear splash.

But more importantly is the shape of the fender which cannot be determined while off the car. You have to bolt the fenders and splash on along with the body and fuel tank etc to check all the lines.

There should be a continuous line from along the front fender to the rear until they turn in. Plus the rear fenders are almost flat. When you see them curved up, you also see the line bend in. This is because they took a hit (usually somebody backed into something or they were side swiped).

This is the reason experienced restores always to the major body work before disassembly. Its the only want to get the geometry right.

The last two photographs look about right. These indentations are to clear the rear spring hangers. If the panels etc are off the car I urge you to fit them at least twice because it is surprising how panels aftyer removal don't fit. I got my panisher (Bert on £8 per hour) to come out and give the odd panel a good hit to make it fit. The rear wings often do not fit well where they wrap around the body at the back - with one deft smack with a suitable hammer Betr got mine to fit.

Back to your wings - that in Pics 1 & 2 may need a touch of a hammer.

I repeat FIT the BLOODY panels BEFORE you attempt to paint. If you have fitted a new tub then fit the windscren before you do anything more - it is surprising how the scuttle can distort.

The P/O was probably afraid the rear spring shackles were too close to the fender and banged a bit further in. However I have 3 td's now ( 1 undergoing a total resto and 1 just finished ) all 3 have some sort of dent at the spot's as in the pictures you showed us.

Just went out to take a look at mine - pic 4 looks about right for the part that is tucked in beside the outside of the rear pan.
It's not a very big indentation at all.

Hello Peter. I have scanned your images over and over again to try to understand the purpose for the indentations in or on your wings . Simply put, they are not supposed to be there. they are not part of the original design. I would suggest you acquire a photo of a rear wing and see for yourself what the difference is . If it is your intentions to finish your car to the original spec's then I must say you have some body work to be done. John

You can sort of see the indent on this fender used for a color test. The second fender looks about correct. The first one is over done.

My opinion, body work is needed! PJ

As seen on the opposite wing.

Another shot and I agree with Paul.

You can actually see the scratch marks in my last post. That's not factory! JMHO. PJ

There is a original but never used TD fender for sale on eBay at the moment. There is an excellent picture showing the indent.

Thanks guys. The pics you posted LaVerne were particularly helpful. I was always aware of the purpose of the indentations eg shackle clearance & for this reason John I believe they are essential, along with the need to ensure the panels cleared the shackles prior to paint. It was pretty obvious Paul that the RH guard had been repaired previously. I have since received another pic which I've posted below showing the guard & apron assembled. The area I was concerned about is not visible on this car except from underneath. I now suspect that this will be the case with any car that has been repaired & reassembled correctly. I was surprised that the guard in my pic 4 seems to be very similiar to LaVerne's pics. If they are original, then they are much like the guards on Gerard's & Bobby's cars. RJ, the panels have been & do fit! (I'm just repairing minor storage dings & scratches.)
Jan, pic 2 below is the NOS guard (fender) on ebay. To my eye it seems to be like a cross between both of my guards, but it seems the point is moot as the area in question won't be seen anyway. Thanks for those contributions that were on point. Much appreciated. Cheers.

The ebay pic shows 3 holes at the tail-light. Mine has just 2 on a raised plinth drilled on the centre line of the panel. So I guess the ebay fender is for the later TD with round tail-lights.

I am mounting my rear fenders currently and the fender intentions seem to be more for the splash apron fitting instead of the spring shakes clearance. My problem has been getting the fender cording snug and tight.
Rich (TD 3983) Taylor

I looked it over and stand corrected. The indention is for the rear splash apron on the top side and Shackle clearance below. It I am ever happy with the cording i will post a picture.

Here's a photo of mine during the resto.
