MG TD TF 1500 - Rear Seal Oil Drip Catcher

A club member has rear seal oil drip catchers available at his cost plus shipping. They are well made. Color is "right."

Hi Lonnie and Declan,

Are those catchers suitable for the finned aluminum sump?

Jesús,
Here's a photo of mine on the ribbed sump.

Declan, thanks for the photo.

I will have a small batch here in the next few days.

Declan can I make a suggestion for thought. What if you were to mount the spigot in the side or rear of the pan. This would prevent it from getting snagged on road debris, trailer ramps, or extreme suspension travel. Just a thought

Like your work. Very well done piece

Bill, that was my thought too.

Interested in getting one, but on Texas roads you hit mattresses and furniture that fall from thousands of uncovered pickup trucks (or thrown 18-wheeler tire treads).

Declan, how do I order one?
C Blackstock

Bill(s),
Thanks for the compliment on the nice work-I will pass it on! They are laser cut and welded and certainly do not look out of place. A few arrived this morning but I can get more.
I will investigate the possibility of having the drain on the side.
These trays are designed to fit other XPAG engined cars eg TBs, TCs, TDs, TFs, Y Saloons and Y Tourers which have differing exhaust pipe arrangements which in turn determines the geometry of the tray. It should be noted that cars with Sierra 5 speed conversions may require a lip to be bent on the front of the tray as the conversion bell housing is a tad thicker than the standard bell housing.
Here's a photo of standard tray. The tap, the U-tube level gauge, are additions that I added on my car. A radiator drain cock would give more road clearance as I have scraped the tap on speed bumps. I could do this as an option.

C Blackstock-I will send you an email

If it is not leaking, it is out of oil.
TRM Maine

I have commented on the design of this item previously and that it is not a mammoth task to fabricate your own.

Pending the volume of oil loss from your engine may necessitate improving the design by fitting wings to the catcher that wrap up onto the bell housing to prevent oil being displaced when the vehicle is at speed.

If the drain is installed on the side face of the catcher it should be mounted to facilitate the complete emptying of all oil.
G Evans

I made up a version with the side exit as suggested. This arrangement could also be fitted at the rear. The base of the 1/8" BSPP thread is flush with the bottom of the tray so the oil can be fully drained. I still have to add a gasket. The simple windscreen insect sponge in the first photo at the top of this thread acts as a baffle and oil is not displaced at speed.

Good solution Declan! I guess it is not really necessary to drain until the last drop comes out of the box.

If you are concerned about the ribs on the sump pushing the tank away from the engine simply bend the split pin so it touches the foam baffle.

I got one from Bryan Purves in the UK, email is bryanpurves1@gmail.com, very similar to Declan's.

I have not fitted it yet.

Not the capacity of above models, but mine does not leak much on shut down. Easy to drain, and does not extend below lowest point of sump.

Started life as a wicked fondue or cooking heat/warmer device in a can from Dollar Tree. Used a partly straightened out 3/4" pipe hanger as mount to bell housing bolt, which was slid in through a small slot cut out in (now) top, along with a few spots of epoxy. Oil still flows freely from split pin, and now into can. It buts up against ribbed sump, and also at top, so no vibrations. Can construction allowed for slight flattening out where it goes up against ribs, so no grinding (at ribs). I did see the one on Ebay for $55 + s/h and it was tempting. On hot shut down I am only loosing about a tablespoon of oil, so I will only need to drain occasionally to keep fluid level below the split pin bottom.

D mckellar

Nice work guys. Now we just have to design it with a long tube and the valve located by the front bumper so that it's easily drained without crawling under.

;)
Kevin McLemore

Or a small pump and place it back into service ( recycle it ) .
M Grogan

Draw into the intake through a tube as a 'top end oiler'.

Oh, wait I have 8 of those... they're called 'leaky valve guides'.

;)
Kevin McLemore

Declan, it does look really nice. Overall, quality welding and workmanship!

Answering your question from Dec 2 ...

I talked to the club member who has the red drip catchers. He told me that the drip catcher does not interfere with a finned aluminum sump.
