MG TD TF 1500 - Recommended tires

I'll be needing tires within the next month. I did a search and came up with nothing so I must be doing it wrong. I know this has been talked about plenty and I bet I even asked about it a few years ago with my first TD.

What size and brands are recommended. I've not a huge budget as I'm spending most of that on a complete braking system but want a decent set.

Cheers,
Vince

Vredestien 165R-15....mid range pricing.. good quality

MG LaVerne

Have em on both cars

If you think you asked about it try the new "Threads started by me" feature on the "Archive" page. You have to try it about 3 or 4 times to get your full list. Some sort of timing issue I think.
Ed
PS: I have the same tires as LaVerne. Good choice.

Kumho makes tires that fit my TD.

I typically purchase from Tirerack or Mavis. Went to Tirerack and the default for 165R15 is 16580R15 and only one listing.

Do we need to run tubes in these or not?

OK,,, Here we go !!!!!!!

Steve, I love it when a plan goes together....Waiting for it.

Problem in the UK is tubes not tyres. My wheels are due to go to the powder coaters who will remove the old tyres, dispose of them and fit new ones. I can thus buy a set of "supply only tyres" at a very competive cost on line. Problem is theses suppliers don't do tubes. If I go to one of the classic car tyre companies the tyres are 30% dearer! Disposal of tyres in the UK is a problem. Many local council dumps charge for their disposal and it is not uncommon to find old tyres simply dumped at the side of the road. They are never 15" ones from a T series though!

Thanks all,

Michelin with tubes, but my race car years ago had tube type wheel rims with no tubeless safety lip for the tire bead to keep it in place, we ran races at 12 -16 psi no problems, tubeless,as per Goodyear tire company!
You must use radial type tubes with a radial tire!

I agree about the Michelins and I have a long saga of horribles about putting radial tubes in bias ply tires (am certain the tale would have been the same with bias ply tubes in radials). Nonetheless, for my '53 TD with stock (original I think) punched steel wheels I run Vredestien 165R-15s without tubes (I don't race and haven't had a tire come off the rim yet). I check the air pressure regularly and rarely have to add any air. Ride and performance are quite satisfactory for my daily driver TD. My local Firestone store got the Vredestiens for me in two days at a very reasonable price.

I run Vredestien 165R-15...good tire. Regards, tom

The here we go was about the tube no tube debate.
Almost impossible to find a new tire designed to run with a tube. A T wheel doesn't have a bead design compatible for tubeless ties but they will work just fine. In addition todays tire distributors are very reluctant to mount a tube in a tubeless tire. That said I think the group goes about 50 50.
MG LaVerne

Don't wish to enter the tube/tubeless debate, (I have tubes in my radials), but I'm very interested in a serious comment made to me recently by a TD owner who runs a business restoring MGs', about cross ply tyres being better suited to T Types than radials. Not because they look original (we all know they do) but as the front end is set up for cross plys, the car actually handles better! I suggested that because radials have more contact with the road, therefore they must be a better proposition from a braking point of view. The reply was if the brakes are well maintained & adjusted, braking on cross plys is fine. He runs cross plys on his car & advised that I should do the same. I aired this on another thread a while ago & got no response. Any informed opinions out there? Cheers

Vredestein 165-15 with tubes on wire wheels. Excellent handling, mid range price.

Vince,
Not a terrible "no-no",, but this subject usually brings out a number of "I use tubes,,, " I don't use tubes",,, "been driveing with out tubes for years" "had a tire fall off the rim at speed because I didn't use a tube" etc,,

I have wires so have no choice in the tube department.

In the past month I've installed 6 new motorcycle tires and every one was tubeless but further noted that if required, fit tube. All were on wire spoke wheels so they got tubes.

I use a good coating of talc in every installation. I don't know if it's absolutely necessary but I do note that tubes tend to stick if it's not used.

Only Avon makes a quality tire in the somewhat antique sizes on a couple of my bikes. They get Michelin tubes nonetheless.

Peter, I've never driven a car new or old that didn't seem to handle better with radials, at least for street use. Where does one even find a bias ply tire these days?

JE Carroll

Jim the guy I mentioned gets his from a supplier in Melbourne. I've never driven on bias/cross plys so I can't comment. Just curious is all. Cheers

Michelin doesn't make 165-15 anymore. I emailed them directly this spring and that was their response. Cooker makes a Michelin clone I believe but very expensive.

I bought my tires from Diamondback in South Carolina. Shaved, balanced and installed by Allen Hendrix at Hendrix Wire Wheel in Greensboro, NC.

My tires are radials with tubes. Great ride and handling. Different handling than the bias ply tires they replaced. Smoother ride.
