MG TD TF 1500 - Remember

Remembering Pearl Harbor and WWII on both sides of the Atlantic and the Pacific. 74 years ago today.

Hard to forget. I lowered the Condo's flag to half staff this morning. Bud

Thanks Tom.

I think that it is also important to remember that the War started on September 1, 1939 - a great deal of tough, costly fighting prior to our entry - two years, three months after the German/Soviet invasion of Poland.

A very sad war indeed.

My father served in WWII and Korea. He is still alive and doing fine. We had a good talk today about his service.

Interesting in that his biggest concern is that we are positioning our self to a similar position today to where we (the US) was in the late 1930's. His words. "How can a world that came together to fight the axis forces allow the carnage and brutality that is going on in the middle east".

I think Bruce's Dad has nailed it on this one. Isolationism didn't work then, (Pearl Harbor) and unfortunately there is no chance that it can work in today's world, (New York, Paris, and the rest). They've come to us whether we are ready for it or not. Can we morally stand by and do nothing when we are witnesses to the carnage both here and overseas?

My apologies for getting on the soapbox on a site that is remarkable for treating one another with kindness and respect. Blame Bruce, he got me thinking about my own Dad's WWII service.

Respectfully,

I agree, we need to take action; but it has to be with allies and it has to be successful. I also think saying no to refugees is no different than denying Jews refugee status in WWII... just my 2c...

Amen Kirk. My dad was a survivor of Guadalcanal.

A friend of ours was on the USS Shaw which was blown up at dry dock during the attack at Pearl Harbor. Yesterday the last surviving officer was interred with his ship mates within the bowels of the USS Arizona.

Several weeks ago our church lost Cmdr Ted Robinson. He was one of the men who picked up the crew of PT-109 (JFK and his crew) in the south Pacific

My Father, also alive and well, was just out of high school and in basic training when the atomic bombs were dropped. His group had been training for the invasion of Japan. Instead became one of the first Occupation Forces in Japan, at the base of Mt Fuji.
He aced some test and was given Corporal stripes and keys to everything. He could check out a jeep or truck anytime, and go for drives on which he saw what few others saw-- and could talk about. All beaches suitable for troop landings were dotted with large, "concrete reinforced steel" bunkers built into the solid rock cliffs overlooking those beaches; at perfect machine gun distance. He was there early enough to see our guys making them disappear, and History to forget. Also, beautifully crafted mahogany "speed" boats with room to fill them with explosives enough to sink troop carriers on impact.
The invasion of Japan would have been a massive slaughter of Allied troops. Not a political statement on "the bomb," rather an informed statement of fact.
That era Japanese "Military Industrial Complex" really screwed over the Japanese people.

I wrote a whole paragraph on the beginning of the war in Europe. hit a button and with this damn computer it disappeared. So I wrote a short sentence. My Dad, LTCR D.D. Maine served in 3 wars after a 27 year career in the US Navy. WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a Fighter, torpedo plane aviator. I was trying to convey that all the wars we have had that was the one that I most admire the people who served. Men and Women. and those who served in Europe, brought back our little cars and started the sports car craze.
