MG TD TF 1500 - Remounting rear fenders on a TF
I'm remounting the rear fenders after a frame-off paint job. There is a bolt hole at the very rear of the fender that lines up with a rectangular bracket welded to the frame. Is there a spacer or some sort of gasket that needs to go between the fender and the bracket to prevent scraping/rubbing/destroying the paint? |

Hi I did this job 6 months ago. My TF had spacers made of cork gasket material in this location. They were rectangular, matching the surface of the frame bracket. There was a "U" cut in for the bolt. I placed them back in on reassembly. Without these, you would have metal on metal. I also added spacer on both sides in order to get better alignment of the fenders with the rear valence. I cut plain 1/4 in. rubber for the additional spacer. Tom '54 TF |

TD's had stacks of fender washers here. I suspect the TF's were the same. Tom's point is correct about the thickness of the spacers used to help the alignment of the fender. |

I'm going to make mine out of 1/8th rubber and stack as necessary. PJ |

On TF0900 they were 1/4 inch leather,1,1/2 inch diameter. On reassembly I soaked them in tanners oil and replaced them. Neville,TF0900..TF9848 |

Great - thanks for the info. I've had good luck in using rubber gasket material in eliminating squeeks between the floor boards and the frame, as well as the transmission tunnel and emergency brake tunnel. Ron |

I made shim packs from an old, one gallon, plastic oil can. Easy to cut, thin enough to give adjustment and looks very professional. Jan T |

On my TD, I used the same rubber spacers that are used between the running board and the real fender. For proper alignment, I taped a string from the front low part of the front fender and fastened it to the rear most part of the back fender. A single spacer on each side made the line of fenders in alignment and protected the paint from cracking preventing future rust. |
