For you chemical engineers. What chemical bath is used to remove chrome from an item and take it to bare metal? PJ

A web search will reveal the methodology to do it yourself, I stripped the chrome from my door hinges very successfully.

Wow watching that link makes one realize why good chrome work costs so much!!

Another way to remove chrome is in a hydrochloric acid bath (AKA muriatic acid); mix the stuff you get for swimming pools 50% with water and attach a positive power supply to it, with a piece of brass or stainless steel for the negative pole. The chrome will come off fairly fast--there is nickel under it, so it is hard to see when it has been removed.

It's really important to remove any surface treatment or contamination before doing this. Make sure there is no lacquer coating (yes, it's done!) and wash in strong detergent with a good rinse to remove oils.

HCl is also great for removing zinc galvanization--just dip it and wait until it stops fizzing. Then rinse and neutralize in a base, or it will rust really fast.
