MG TD TF 1500 - removing flywheel

I've read pros and cons of removing flywheel. Mine is totally exposed from inside cab as part of 5 speed project. The 4 bolts are easy to get at now.
Is it easy or hard? I would remove it to take it to a machine shop to press the new spigot bushing. (I've had difficulty with that task in the past due to eye problems.) I've ready you must drop the oil pan, etc.
Thanks,
Ed

I think you will find the flywheel cannot be removed without removing the oil pan. At this point, invest in a tap (the type for tapping a flat bottom hole) thread a bolt into the bushing and rent a slide hammer from an auto parts store. That should get it out and save all the labor and new pan gasket required to drop the sump. Good luck!

Ed, the bushing fits into the flanged end of the crankshaft---Removing the flywheel will not help. The machined hole in the flywheel is quite a bit larger than the bushing O.D. and the bushing will pass right through during installation / removal of the bushing.

Sorry Ed, I did not read your post thoroughly. I thought you were still trying to remove the bushing. John

x2 what Richard says.

If the clutch face on the fly wheel is not scored, hot spots evident or the ring gear damaged I would "leave sleeping dogs lie".

It looks like gunk dripping from the rear freeze plug. If that is coolant, time to change that while you can get to it. George

If you do decide to drop the pan and remove the fly wheel ensure you inspect the rear cam shaft welsh plug for integrity and maybe coat it with JB Weld.
G Evans

George, that gunk is, I believe, JB Weld PO put on. I've never seen a H2o leak there yet. Hope I never do.

Removing the flywheel indeed won't work, I see that now. Wonder why my machinist suggested it? Maybe other cars work differently in that respect?
Thanks for the responses.

After realizing how much of a problem you could have got into, is it time to find another machinist ??

Steve, my thoughts exactly. He's the only one in Gunnison County, CO and he's 30 miles from me!

Pretty sure some motors do require flywheel removal, just not ours. Maybe that is what the guy was thinking of. Glad plug not leaking! George
