MG TD TF 1500 - replacing steering rack boot/seal
Hi Everyone, Is there a trick to replacing the steering rack seal (boot)? Which part should I disassemble to slide on the new boot? Thanks, dan |

Dan you need to remove the tie road end. Count the number of turns and put it back the same. This will save or get you real close to the alignment you had before the removal. The rubber is held on by two straps. Slide the old one off ane new one on. Piece of cake. Joe |

dan, no tricks, just unthread the tie rod ends and slip the boot into position ..if your front end alignment is good you maybe able to save the alignment by counting the threads as you unscrew the tie rod end and rethreading the same number. regards, tom |

Oh, don't they make it sound so easy... Probably the hardest thing is fitting the new boot over the large steering rack opening. I turn the wheel so that there is no strain on the boot, and try to hold the back side of the boot in place while I work a small screwdriver or hook around the rest of the boot. Sometimes a pair of pliers helps (be sure not to tear the boot). And also remember that the clamps need to be pretty tight to prevent the boots from pulling off, since when turning full lock the boot is stretched. And finally, remember that the correct lubricant is oil, not grease (for much discussion on this, see the archives). Tom Lange MGT Repair |

If you put the Boot in hot water, it will make it more plyable,,, Which ever installation works for you, make sure you write it down for future reference,, as the boots are made out of real junk,, and if you drive the car a lot, they will crack again in a short few years!! SPW |

Hi Dan, make a ring of metal ( I use hose clip material) That will just fit over the rack end.Slip this inside the new boot and slide over the rack. Remove the ring and fit the clip. Easy, job done. Ray TF2884 |
