MG TD TF 1500 - Reversing Lamp
The box of bits which came with my TF includes a Lucas reversing lamp. I even have the ivory coloured switch which lights up when the rear lamp is switched on. I have seen these lamps mounted above and below the bumper, close to the over rider. I prefer the under position but will the lamp not fill with water. Perhaps I should seal the wire hole with silicone sealant. Cheers Jan T |

With the red lens and mounted high, makes a great third brake light! |

Jan, If you're referring to the Lucas L494 Reversing Lamp, the lens may be made of "Crystallite" an acrylic plastic. If you plan to seal the lamp for use under the rear apron, then I suggest you use a glue/sealer that doesn't have solvents that may actually bond with the lens. There are many sealants that can do the job, w/o consuming the plastic lens. A reversing lamp under the apron, takes a lot of abuse and expect the housing to become sand-pitted. Jan I have the L494 mounted on the drivers side on TOP of the rear apron. Looks very neat and stock up there. If you mount it below the deck, the rear bumper will get in the way of your useful light. Larry, I bought a red 494 and plan to use it as a third brake light, but have not yet. Think I'll mount it to my luggage rack. Can you post a photo of how you have yours mounted? Tom '54 TF |

Tom, I do not have the capability right now to post a picture. I mounted mine in the center of the rack at the back. Since I don't use the high mount rack to carry anything due to visibility problems, it works good. Hope this helps. |

Mine was mounted by the first owner on a chromed 'C' bracket attached to the existing rear apron hole. Rather ineffective though. Matthew. ![]() |

Older pic of mine with red lens. It now has a clear one (can see just the end of it in pic taken today in the "Thread: TD paint delemna". For years I parked in a storage space with no lights and it was handy for backing into the space. According to Matthew and I: Correct placement is behind the driver & on top! LOL OBTW: Mine was an easy choice. Right after painting the car there was a blemish in the paint right there. ![]() |

I've bought 2 lamps ex eBay. Both have halogen bulbs and produce a very bright light. Not expensive but IMHO the looks are period-correct. Mounted the one with the white lens as a reverse light on the right part of the S-bracket for the license plate, and the red lens as a 3rd brake light using a selfmade s/s bracket. Jasper ![]() |
