MG TD TF 1500 - Rubber Pedal Boot

I have just rebuilt and assembled the pedals and the pedal box on the TD. New bushes and paint and even fabricated a clutch pedal stop that never existed there before. The engine and gearbox are out and so are the floors. My question is about the rubber boot over the pedal arms. Am I going to have trouble fitting this part? It will need to stretch quite a bit. I do hope I will not need to dismantle things to get it over the clutch pedal arm when the time comes.
I must assume that these things wear out pretty frequently. It is hard to imagine that so much disassembly would be required to replace them. So are there any tips on installing them without doing damage to it?
Thank you. Happy and Merry,
Sandy

Obviously you have to remove the pedal pads and extensions, after that it should go over with some stretching.

Sandy,

I have replaced the rubber pedal pads in situ on our TF. Very occasionally the rubber pad can actually come off the alloy base during hard driving ! I therefore use a strong ( 3M 90) adhesive when fitting them up onto the pedal base.

Smear some detergent over the inside of the rubber for it will make it slippery and much more easy to fit.

Sandy, get a tube of generic K-Y Jelly at your neighborhood drugstore. Squeeze a bunch of it into the boot and it'll slip right over the arms. You'll want the boot to be warm when you're doing it. Bud

This is one of the rubber parts from the major supplier that many have had trouble fitting due to the poor quality rubber, which unfortunately is very prone to tearing. Agree with all of the methods suggested. Care, some heat & lubrication are all good suggestions. Cheers

These are all pleasantly agreeable answers. Just what I was hoping to hear. And Rob, your responce cracks me up. Hard driving? When this car finally gets on the road, I will drive it as gingerly as anything I have ever driven before! Like a teenage girl in drivers ed. Thanks to everyone. (Mr.) Sandy B.

The boot Abingdon Spares at least used to supply is very thick, strong and seems to last for a few years. No need to baby your car- mine is always pedal to the metal! George

I used a hot air blower to heat the boot til it was hot to the touch and it slipped on easily.

Silicon grease makes the assembly of glass panels and rubber components easy, just dont use it where you intend to spray paint especially 2 pack.
