MG TD TF 1500 - Rubber snug over gearbox remote

Quick question before I give myself some extra work.
Does the rubber snug (Moss 282-680 ) fit over the transmission sheet metal cover or is it supposed to go between the cover and the actual remote? Thanks. Paul

Geoffery, I made the same mistake, as appearance wise, you would think it goes under since it fits so well, but I put it where everyone said, on top. I wonder why they did this since it fits so well underneath? PJ

I agree with Paul when he said, " I wonder why they did this since it fits so well underneath?" As a result, I put mine under the metal which fits very tightly on top of the rubber and makes a much better dust, dirt an oil seal. Just my 2 cents worth.

For what it worth,
I don't think you need anything that is in physical contact with the engine or drive chain.
It just adds vibration you don't need. However small.
That's why I believe it goes above the cover and it was that way on both the TDs I have owned.

But Hey, I guess you can do what ever you personally prefer.

Check the "Archive" this subject got hammered to death previously.

OK, read through the archives on this one. Obviously, two schools of thought, the majority (and, I think, the best evidence) suggesting it goes on top.
However, mine is already underneath.
As many posters attest, having it underneath seems to do no harm; many have had it under for decades.
I'm pretty sure mine was already under, I don't recall having to take it off.
So I'm going to leave mine under, unless someone presents a compelling case otherwise.

Gents,

I will join the under contingent. I remember looking at the new part from Moss years ago. The underside looked as if it was moulded from the top of a transmission. Never thought to ask a question. Now thirteen years later no problems and no vibration that I can note. Also, the transmission cover fit in place easily with no special effort as far as I can remember. Just my two cents...

Ok, this made me think I had totally lost it as I had put the rubber snug directly on the transmission and under the sheet metal transmission cover on the TF I am working on at this time. Than I began to use reason, (1)never seen one installed on top of the sheet metal. (2)what purpose would it serve sitting on top. (3) checked Horst Schach, Restoration Manual, page 140, top photo, it is under the sheet metal cover and if you look at the rolled edge of the sheet metal cover opening for the remote shifter I would say that was the intent. I could be wrong but on this car that's where it is.
