MG TD TF 1500 - Running Board Chrome Strips

Do the chrome strips lay on top of the rubber that separates the front fender and running board, or is the rubber notched out or flattened so the chrome strips lay flat on the metal surface? PJ

Paul,
The strips are laid on top of the rubber, but I'm going to have to remove my strips to put a slight upward bend in them. The attachment screws/nuts won't pull the strips down into position. They ride high, above the running boards.

I don't remember the old ones on the old rubber being that high. In fact the old strips were almost flat close the rubber. I'll see if I have one of the old rubbers to see if they were lower in height. The new strips lay too high to look right and I don't want to bend them pulling them down. ??? PJ

Paul. I would also like to know the definitive answer to this. At the moment I have left the chrome strips off the car because I have yet to do final polishing of the paint (cellulose lacquer). Looking at the photos in Clausager's Original MG T Series using a magnifier it seems that the chrome strips rise over the rubber joint strips.

Right or wrong, I cut the top of the "T" off the rubber where the strips go over the rubber.
MG LaVerne

Paul,

I have attached a picture of the rubber joint I removed from my TF a few months ago. I have a lot of confidence that these are original pieces and it appears the chrome strips laid over the rubber and were crushed into shape. There is no sign of cuts being made.

The softness of the rubber may make a big difference. That last image shows the chrome strip has been down real tight, whether we can get it to fit that well with modern rubber is an open question. I am tempted to cut the top off the T like LaVerne or abrade it down a little. Not sure how yet,

Thanks guys for all your input on this. I opted to lay the strips on top of the rubber. I pulled them down pretty tight, but not enough to distort them. I'll let them set that way for maybe a couple months and and snug them again, then see if the rubber collapses a bit under the strips.PJ

Sorry I don't have a close up pic.
