MG TD TF 1500 - Running Board Strip Fasteners

Chris Cooper and I are having a discussion on the fasteners used on the TD to secure the strips to the running board. The suppliers all show bolts with nuts. Moss even says that they contracted to have "original" bolts made.

Chris has pictures of soft aluminum rivets, so that is what I am listing.

Anyone have a picture of the top of the rivit in an original TD?

My TD also had soft aluminum rivets.
I may have one left. I will look in the morning.
I did put new strips back with new (not Moss) soft rivets.

I have several original strips. It appears that I clipped off the meaning on the underside, but I may have a picture?
I drove a rivet partially out and took a picture form the side.

Is this what you are looking for?

I purchased some rivets from McMasters (I believe) I remember? that they did not have the correct heads and I remember? re-machining the heads. I may have some pictures if you are interested.

My pictures are dated 7/13/11. so memory may be limited

I finished putting on my running board strips. I determined from a number of sources that rivets were used (at least on the early TD's) to fasten the runners to the running board.

All the suppliers provide bolts and nuts for this.

Here are some pictures of how I did the rivets.

More pictures.

I got the rivets off Ebay from a UK supplier. They are 3/16" x 5/16" Long Aluminium Alloy C/sk Flat Head Solid Rivets.

Just bought some of these going to use them on the reassembly of my spot light but think might try them on the running if ever necessary board strips. Being brass corrosion resistant plus removable. Might need a bit of Loctite to stop unscrewing due to vibration.

I am familiar with the shank type rivets, which are installed with plier-type device, but not these. How are they installed?

Bill. Here is how I did it. I put a chunk of steel in the vice that fit the interior of the bracket. This holds the rivet in.

I put tape on the underside so I did not mess the paint up, and hit it with a hammer until the aluminum flattened out.

It probably would be easier with two people.

Thanks, Bruce….

Bill, if you are referring to my comment about "screw" type rivets the head will be simply inserted in the rail having filed to shape then located in the running board holes and the "male bolt" screwed into the female in the rail. I'll be using Loctite to aid securing although a bit of silicone may also do the job. They will allow me to with ease periodically remove the rails for "maintenance"
