MG TD TF 1500 - Scuttle outer rail mesurment
Would anyone know the width measurements of the outer rail in front of the scuttle from the most forward ends? I believe mine has shrunk over the years approximately 1/4 of an inch overall. Mine measures 36 7/8". The side rail tops measures 37 1/8" at the start of the curve. They don't match! Moss illustration. PJ![]() |

They tend to warp, increasing the arch. Check the bow to see if this is correct. I suspect it may have just warped and not shrunk. David |

Hasn't re arched as it matches the scuttle shape, it's just shorter. I'll replace it with a new one, as long as I know the measurement of the new ones. Possibly Moss can tell me. Pretty good bunch of guys there. PJ |

Paul. I don't think that it has shrunk that much in that direction. Wood shrinks across the grain depending on moisture content. Lengthwise it might shrink a few thousandths on an inch. It had to be that way when installed. somebody may have created one a bit too short. Sandy |

Hi Paul, I have just measured an original, excellent condition front wood scuttle wood piece and it is right on 36 and 7/8"!(forward ends) I would be having a careful assessment of the positions of the two near vertical side front rails in question. There position both inward or outward can be influenced by any small movements within the bolt holes of these wood pieces. The Factory holes tend to be larger compared to bolt diameter, possibly for this critical adjustment. Accidents in the past can also be a factor.I also know that when the horizontal cross pieces from the scuttle panel are released, there is a natural tendency for the side, near vertical wood pieces to move in an outward direction. You may need therefore to use a long cramp to set the scuttle width in again to the desired position in relation to the wood cross piece.Slacken relevant bolts off first. I agree with Mr Sander, wood in these positions on the car does not tend to move or indeed rot out too much! However,be aware that some of the repro.wood pieces supplied may be the correct length but not the original section(thickness). The original pieces were 13/16". The repros can be smaller in thickness, with the result that the Bonnet Rest Rubber 'hangs' slightly over the wood pieces.Just looks a little untidy. Cheers Rob Grantham("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Thanks Rob for that measurement! as David said about not shrinking length wise, that proves it on my piece, it's as it should be. I will re check the position of the vertical pieces on each side and move them inward slightly and see where were at on alignment. There is a little bit of oversize in the bolt holes, so I'll try to reposition them. The original wood is in very good condition, so that's not an issue. PJ |

OOps, I made a mistake, sorry! I mistook SS Sanders for David! Apologies. Both give excellent information though! Grin. PJ |
