MG TD TF 1500 - Sealant for fuel sending unit gasket?

I have a soft rubber, double-flange gasket from Doug Pelton for the TF fuel sending unit (photo). Should I apply a sealer of some sort? What is recommended for this type gasket?

thanks,
Tyler

By the way, check out the finish of the fuel tank interior. It was very rusty with 9 pin hole leaks across the bottom. The photo is after a thorough cleaning and the Bill Hirsch 2-part tank sealer.

I guess you could use some Permatex gas sealant

Why don't you ask Doug?

I think I would use a thin line of the suggested sealer on both sides of the gasket as well as a very little bit on the threads of each retaining screw. Don't tighten down the screws too much also. Just make them snug so as not to warp the metal sender flange.

Hi Tyler
The only sealant I have found the works work is an aircraft fuel tank sealant. It is PRC 1422 A 1/2. It will never leak. It is a little spender.

Put some on your finger tip, wipe the gasket on both sides with a thin even layer of sealant and put together. When cured it forms a tough rubber like consistency. Gas won't penetrate it, nor any other auto related liquid that I know of. Parts are easy to remove later if needed. PJ

For the Europeans-Reinzoplast is what I used and it sealed perfectly and is fuel proof.

Paul beat me to it ...I second Permatex Ultra Copper...good stuff!

Is the permatex ultra copper Gasoline proof? I didn't see anything about it on the package. They do make a gasoline proof sealer which is non -silicon. They call it assembly sealant. I don't have the part no. with me, sorry.
I used a silicon product and it only lastesd about one year, then I got to do it over again :(

I've heard nothing but problems in regard to sealing the sending unit with any sort of soft gasket. Has anybody had success with this one from Doug? Bud
Bud Krueger

I used the Ultra Copper on a new hard original type gasket and it didn't leak. I made sure the tank surface and sender surface was clean and smooth. I also put a small dab on the screw threads, just enough to coat the groves in the threads. The screws will come out easily if needed later. PJ

The Abingdon Spares gasket kit does not leak. If you must use sealant, DO NOT use any silicone, use Permetex number two, non hardening sealant. I use alight coat on the threads of the screws, as they thread directly in to the tank.

Here's what the A/S kit looks like and their directions. Bud

Tyler, what did you use to clean the rust? Tank interior looks great.

Just for the record, the same gasket is fitted to the old Fiat 127, available from any Fiat dealer.

This issue has been discussed previously. The Doug Pelton solution is the best option with the use of a very old product named "Stag" that has been around for decades.

"Stag" is a pipe sealing compound, impervious to fuel and sets hard without negating the ability to disassemble components.

Before installing a sender unit ensure you address the poor design issues that I have identified in my previous posts contained in the archive, if you search on Graeme you will find them.

Frank,
To answer your question, there was heavy rust along the length of the bottom (and pin holes)of the tank with moderate rust throughout. I rolled the tank on a home-made rotisserrie (sp?) with Marine Clean and a pile of big nuts and bolts inside. Rinsed with water, them Metal Prep (a phosphoric acid available a auto paint suppliers). That did not remve the heavy rust. I used muriatic to get the heavy rust on the bottom. Clean as a whistle. Then Bill Hirsch 2-part sealer. It looks very nice inside now.

Chris: I found the Permatex Permashield at an Autozone in Las Cruces, NM.

Bud: the gasket from Doug is a soft (rubber) gasket. It should mash up when I torque down the screws, but the sealant is for insurance.

I don't think you can find the Stag sealant in the States. I tried.

thanks, Tyler

Tyler, the problem tends to be from the soft gaskets oozing out around the screws. Perhaps Doug's doesn't do that. Bud

For fuel proof sealant try Permatex Hylomar. Remains pliable and seals wonderfully.
R W Hinton

1) Permatex no longer is associated with Hylomar. However, Hylomar is an excellent non-hardening gasket sealant and is available from Moss.
2) Stag is also known as Wellseal and is also available from Moss.
