MG TD TF 1500 - Seat cushions
Hi aagain I have today taken apart my seat cushions as they have gone a bit soft and making longer rides less comfortable than I prefer. I found that the bad part of the filling already by the former owner had been cut out and replaced. However, this repair didn't turn out to be durable, and I decided to go for a new fillings, until I saw what Moss charge for these! Does anyone have an alternative supplier or a fix that lasts? As always thanks in advance and a happy MG New Year to you all Torben |

Torben, when you say the "bad part of the filling" had already been cut out, what is it that you have left? Is their still part of the latex foam? You can replace any of it with modern foam. An upholsterer should have foam in different densities. Might be the thing to have a consult with someone like that and have the foam set-up for you, for comfort. |

Torrent, do you still have the original "egg crate" foam? Another poster on the forum cut cubes of modern memory foam to fit in the open spaces in the original foam. I made my own cushions by purchasing memory foam stock on eBay and used an electric meat knife to carve the new cushions ...I am very satisfied with the results. Regards, Tom |

If you have an upholstery supplier provide the foam...be sure to sit on it before you buy it... High density seems like a good idea until you stretch your vinyl/leather over it, then it can become very very firm... My foam guy has tons of seat sized pieces and when I did my last project I combined soft, medium and firm to get a comfortable feel.... |

I agree with Gordon. I used a medium grade and even that is quite firm. Regards Declan ![]() |

Hi Tom asks if the eaps from a local foamgg crates still are intact. To that I can answer no.......... in the attachmentis a picture showing what is left. To me it looks like new cushions. Perhaps from a local upholstery company as Gordon mentions? rgds Torben ![]() |

Torben; The foam does not look too bad actually. You didn't have a picture of the top side , so i am assuming it is one piece. Using the "Gord Lawson Method", I would re-foam the bottom of the original Latex foam with foam "blocks" cut to fit the "egg crating". The piece that is missing.... just use a bigger block to fit. This also gives you a chance to use different densities of foam for a more comfortable seat. Up to you though. After all its your "butt". |

Toben: Not too bad at all really. You have something to work with. Here was my approach: http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_seat_padding.htm |

torben, i believe you are correct..that piece is beyond..recovery. regards, tom |

...Chris... nice job... that looks like a really smart rebuild..... |

Gordon: But now between bolstering the seats and putting in the heavy floor mats I cannot get in my car anymore! I took it out on Christmas day (one benefit of Californias current draught) and had to squeeze into the car. Or maybe it was all that Christmas season food :-) |

...back in the day, my father had the seat bottoms of an Austin Healey 100/6 redone with high density foam...sure looked nice, but there was no give and I had to look above the windshield...not to mention falling off them when cornering...great fun ... not...!!! |

Hi Declan, Your seats looks superb. Did you make a new cover or recondition the oriinal? My TF's seats have not be sat on since 1963 but have lots of boxes and spare parts stored on them. They are dirty, scuffed and hard but there are no splits or holes. I am pondering reconditioning them using products from Furniture Clinic - you can see videos on YouTube. They had a stand at a classic car event last year and displayed the usual "half before treatment and half after" seat. One side was exactly like yours the other exactly like mine! Before I do anything I would like to hear the views from someone who has actually reconditioned the leather on a seat. Good New Year to All Jan T |

Jan, The covers are all new leather all round which I know is not original. A local trimmer did the sewing and did a brilliant job. He also did the Tonneau cover at the same time. Regards Declan |

This is what I use for leather. Everyone around here uses it on their saddles and tack. I used it to restore a pair of T Bird White leather seats and they came out beautiful and much softer. Amazon sells it and I believe it's available for overseas shipment. PJ
