MG TD TF 1500 - See the gap
If you look at the bonnet at the grille end you will notice the gap between the Bonnet and the side panel, I could not get that out with adjustment, the small brackets on the radiator that attach to the grille were in the wrong place and bent out of shape by the radiator people before I got it, I presume, the radiator straps soldered to the radiator body were all over the place, the left strap hard up on the engine side of the tank top locating area and the right hand strap hard up on the rear, so I am hoping that when I put the radiator and the grill back it all lines up. Hope you can see it and understand what I am saying regards George ![]() |

George, It's really hard to see from your photo,, can you take it standing much closer to the problem area? Maybe a few taken around the rad bracket ? SPW |

Yes I thought that may be the case Steve, car is apart in that area at the moment, Regards george |

George, I had similar problems with the fit on my TF. I put a thick packer between the radiator mounting and the side panel plate and the fit is now very good. The car is in the mock-up stage and is ready to be pulled apart for painting. I am considering taking the radiator brackets off and re-attaching them at the correct height to eliminate the packers. |

Do you have a pic of that Max trying to visualise it Regards george |

I will take an image tomorrow and load it on the board. A bit late in the day over here. |

Thanks a lot mate regards George |

On the TDs, if the radiator support is on backwards, the location of the radiator is off a fraction of an inch. The smaller flange of the support is forward and the thicker flange is to the rear (to best of my recollection). |

George, Refer the images, there is about 12mm of packing. I have looked at other TF's and the mounting bracket is higher on the radiator. My brackets look like they have been off the radiator at some point and put back in the wrong position. ![]() |

Another image showing the side panel to bonnet fit. there is tape over the grille for protection of the new chrome during line up of the panels.

Thanks Max get it now, but I don't think I will have that problem getting ready to fit up soon, will post pic's when done. regards George |
G Mills |
Which gap are you concerned about? |
Max Irvine |
The bonnet to side panel at the radiator end it's or was about 12 to 15 mm Regards George |
G Mills |
I just had another look at the first image you showed of the side of your car. It looks to me like the whole side panel is too far back. The back corner of the panel should line up with the back corner of the bonnet. I can't tell from the image if the bonnet rest rubber continues down between the side panel and the bodywork, does it? The gap appears narrow. |

Max, here is a photo of an unmolested original TF -it looks like it also required packing. JKB ![]() |

Max that photo was taken the day I got the car, the side panel is ok it's the bonnet, it had moved forward because it was not secure in the locating piece on the grille (grille being forward too much) because the radiator and grille were not fitted correctly after a radiator clean out some years before hand, the old chap that owned the car would not have known of this or if he did he did not worry about it as he rarely drove the car. Regards george |
G Mills |
Thanks JK. My car has twice that packing but I will probably leave it rather than move the brackets. |
