MG TD TF 1500 - Shipping to UK

Has anyone sold and shipped their TD to the UK. If so what are the procedures and costs?

Okay. Has any one shipped an MG to the UK?

George,

It seems that quite a few MGBs get shipped from the States back to the UK. You might try asking the question on the MGB General board and see if you get any help.

do a google on car container shipping usa uk cost

:once a car is at the docks then about £1500 - £2000 to cross the pond in a box, less for roro and the higher end maybe more now if west coast. Add on about 1% for marine insurance for when the boat sinks, catches fire or they just ding it drop it etc.

In the UK its
+10% duty on the purchase price (what the invoice says) + shipping cost
+20% VAT on the duty and shipping
allow up to another £500 - £1k for you to do the IVA and get registered taxed etc, maybe more if you get someone to do the work for you.

but an exported car is duty paid? well it was eu changed that?

roro seems cheeper?

try here, they have a discussion board.

George, a few months ago I shipped a TC to the UK. I delivered it to a shipping agent in Vancouver and they took care of everything else. The purchaser took care of the taxes ect. at the other end. If I remember correctly the shipping cost from Vancouver was a little under $2000 Cdn.

George,
I did it in 2008. I found a professional who did all the organization and paperwork. They organized the truck that picked up the car in North Carolina bringing it down to Florida. There, the TD was packed into a 20 feet Container together with another Car.
I send the car to Amsterdam because at that time in the Netherlands they ask just 5 or 6% Tax that’s it. I'm not sure if this regulation is still the same today.

Everything runs perfect. I picked the car myself in Amsterdam and trailered it to Hamburg, Germany, my Hometown.
Enclosed the bill I had to pay.
Good luck,
Ganter

Hugh, Can you remember the name od the shipping agent?

Thanks for all you comments. It looks like it would be a lot easier and cheaper shipping from Canada.

One strong caution if you're going to use 'roll on / roll off' shipping... don't leave *anything* of any value whatsoever with the car. Hubcaps (nave plates), hood ornaments (bonnet mascots), things in the glove box, tool kits, etc. should all be removed prior to shipping. And don't even *think* of putting anything in the car and expecting to see it on the other side. Trust me on this - I've been there. I've shipped several cars from the UK to the US and I've lost something important almost every time. The worst was many years ago when we were shipping a Lotus Super 7 to the US and it was a roll on / roll off job. The car drove onto the boat just fine, but when it came time to get it off it would not start... seems something was missing... the entire engine and gearbox! As it was a numbers-matching car it was a great loss and to add insult to injury they charged me extra for 'removing' the car from the boat. Yes, insurance covered obtaining a replacement engine and gearbox, but it didn't cover the lost value in the originality of the car.

My recommendation is to use a container for anything you care about.

George, here is the shipping company details:
Gabryelle van der Molen
Astra International Moving and Storage
Phone - 604 422 8001
email - gabryelle@astrainternational.com

Gabryelle was very helpful with the shipping details.
The company puts the car in a container at their depot along with other stuff going to the UK. Evidently they build a structure around the car to protect it. I inquired about sending loose parts in the car and they said they have never had anything go missing. I think this is because the company seals the container before it is delivered to the dock.
I can highly recommend this company.
Cheers, Hugh

I shipped an MG J2 from Minnesota to the UK. The buyer arranged the shipping, but he used E.H. Harms from Baltimore to Southampton. Since Harms primarily ships new cars from Europe to the US, if they don't have anything to go back, they go back empty. Thus their eastbound shipping is very reasonable. From Minnesota to Baltimore, he used a company called Enclosed Vehicle Transport. They shipped a tiny J2 in a huge 75 foot trailer.
There were no issues, not even a scratch, with either company, yet the costs were VERY reasonable.
