MG TD TF 1500 - SIde Curtain Box Top

The top wood for the side curtain box I ordered has a small wood ridge on the top of the backside. I know the board screws under the rear top horizontal wood strip, but why the extra piece of wood. Is it to keep the board flat across the top of he fender wells?

Bruce Cunha

I think it is to stiffen the board on the back. Note I think you have it upside down in your picture as it would not have a ridge on the top side.
Christopher Couper

That's what I thought Chris, but the bottom side has the edge that the door goes against. That is why I was posting about it.

Does the top get a piece of underpadding on it, or just upholstery to the wood?

Bruce Cunha

I recall running into that when I was restoring 'The53'. Eventually figured it out. It fills a gap between the top of the Compartment Top and the bottom of the Top Back Rail.
Image1 shows a wedge shoved between the Compartment Top and the Top Back Rail. I drew a line across the wedge. Image2 shows a closeup of the line on the wedge. The added piece is on top of the Compartment Top, as Bruce showed it. Bud

Interesting. I probably should not have commented because except for tonneau covers, I don't do upholstery. :-)

I looked at the picture of the rear shelf on AS and can make out the same thin strip.

So I get this correct, the shelf gets a screw in each of the side door stops. Does it also get a screw underneath into the top rail?

This little strip acts as a spacer?
